“Fragrant” – Viaje olfativo a través de la Historia

El sentido del olfato es como un escritor anónimo de la historia humana. Ha sido parte y razón de importantes decisiones políticas así como también de las antiguas fantasías de los tiempos pasados. Diferentes culturas han sido moldeadas por mitos y leyendas entretejidas con la fascinación por los aromas, y marcados por la profunda influencia de diversos olores.

“Fragrant: The Secret Life Of Scent” (Fragante: La Vida Secreta del Perfume) – el nuevo libro de Mandy Aftel– es una irresistible invitación para todos aquellos apasionados por la perfumería como disciplina y por la historia. La autora realiza un viaje exploratorio hacia el pasado con destinación a cinco diversos aromas: canela, menta, incienso, ambargris y jazmín. Todo este proceso de escritura incluso la inspiró a crear su último y aclamado perfume, Palimpsest(*).

Cada uno de los arriba mencionados aromas encarna el descubrimiento de nuestras necesidades, sentimientos y apetitos. Saltar hacia lo nuevo, la atracción por lo exótico y el lujo (canela); la necesidad del arraigo y del sentido de pertenencia, la calidez de lo familiar (menta); la búsqueda de lo espiritual, lo ritual y lo trascendental (incienso); la fascinación por lo misterioso y desconocido, lo “otro” (ambargris); el disfrute de lo bello, el placer por lo estético (jazmín).

Si bien Mandy ha estado brindando avances de su nuevo libro en diversos eventos (uno de ellos fue en el Berkeley Art Museum), yo esperaba ansiosa el poder leerlo por el particular entusiasmo que ella misma mostraba. Cuando hablaba sobre su experiencia escribiendo Fragrant, su rostro iluminado y mirada brillante me indicaban que este libro sería muy especial. Y así fue.

Hasta ahora lo he leído dos veces, de principio a fin. Pero también vuelvo a releer algunos fragmentos cada tanto: su riqueza es inagotable. No puedo dejar de admirar el abordaje meticuloso de la autora y la fragilidad que muestra al exponerse como ser humano. Ella escribe con una sensibilidad auténtica, comparte su perspectiva y hallazgos desde lo más fondo de su corazón.

“Podemos pensar porque podemos oler” escribió Diane Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses). Cuando Mandy hizo esta cita al principio de su obra, estaba remarcando un hecho crucial. La nariz es idiosincráticamente central: ella “escribe” nuestros pensamientos, memorias y la noción que tenemos de nosotros mismos.

“Fragrant” – A scented journey through History

The sense of smell is like an anonymous writer of human history. It has been part and reason of important political decisions as well as of the most ancient fantasies of bygone times. Different cultures have been shaped by myths and legends interwoven with a fascination for scents, and real life events have been traced by the deep influence of smells.

“Fragrant: The Secret Life Of Scent”–Mandy Aftel‘s latest book- is an irresistible invitation for those who are passionate about perfumery and history. The author makes an exploratory journey through the past with certain chosen scents as destinations: cinnamon, mint, frankincense, ambergris, and jasmine. This whole process even inspired her to create Palimpsest (*), her brand new and acclaimed perfume.

Each one of the aforementioned scents embodies the discovery of our needs, feelings and appetites. Jumping into something new and pursuing the exotic and luxurious (cinnamon); luring of roots and sense of belonging, the warmth of the familiar (mint); spiritual search, the ritual and transcendental (frankincense); the fascination for the unknown, the “other” (ambergris); the enjoyment of beauty, the pleasure and aesthetics (jasmine).

Although Mandy has been bringing advances of this new book to several events (one of them was at the Berkeley Art Museum) I was looking forward to read it especially because of her enthusiasm about it. When she talked about her own journey writing Fragrant, her lit-up face and shiny eyes told me that this book would be a special one. And so it was.

At the time I have read it twice, from start to end. But I also return to re-read some fragments again from time to time: its richness is inexhaustible. I can’t but admire the meticulous approach of the author and the fragility of her exposure as a human being. She writes with authentic sensibility, shares her perspective and findings from the very bottom of her heart.

“We think because we smelled” wrote Diane Ackerman (A Natural History of the Senses). When Mandy quoted her at the beginning of the book, she made a point. The nose is idiosyncratically central: it “writes” our thoughts, memories and sense of who we are.
