Skinlife – Tratamiento especial en Lisboa

El sonido del fado se funde con el aroma del café recién molido y de las magnolias en flor en una de las ciudades más encantadoras del mundo ¡Ah,hermosa, hermosa Lisboa!

En el barrio de Chiado,  apenas a una cuadra de A Brasileira, el bar preferido de Fernando Pessoa, la vidriera de Skinlife atrajo mi atención. Como verán, las perfumerías siguen cruzándose en mi camino ya que -lo juro- en realidad estaba buscando una padaria (panadería) y no tenía intención alguna de comprar perfumes durante este viaje. Dudé unos diez segundos y me convencí de que el lugar sería un bienvenido refugio del sol enceguecedor. No me equivoqué: el interior era fresco, luminoso y confortable.

Skinlife es propiedad de dos espléndidos jóvenes holandeses -Patrick y Dennis- y está atendido por ellos. Amables y sencillos, me permitieron  curiosear y olisquear libremente aunque estaban dispuestos a ayudar ante cada pregunta. Los Atelier Colognes y Hierbas de Ibiza se veían tentadores bajo el calor del verano, pero -¡esperen!- también había algunos Editions de Parfums por ahí (¿sería este el momento de darme el gusto y comprar Une Rose de una vez por todas?)…y Maison Francis Kurkdjian (¡ah, los hipnóticos vapores animales de Absolue pour le Soir!). Unos momentos más tarde mi selección se había achicado y me debatía entre Mona di Orio Musc y Vanille. Como no quería tomar la decisión a los apurones, me distraje mirando otros productos (además de perfume, la tienda ofrece accesorios en cuero de The Guild of Holland, cremas para el cuidado de la piel y maquillajes).

Me acomodé en un sillón y pasé un buen rato hablando con Patrick mientras daba tiempo a que los perfumes evolucionaran sobre mi piel. Patrick también es maquillador, así que la conversación entre ambos fluyó con facilidad. Café por medio charlamos sobre temas tan diversos como nuestras líneas y creadores  favoritos, maquillaje para novias y la reina Máxima. La cortés atención que recibí no se acota a los clientes: un transeúnte entró preguntando por un cierto perfume mainstream y fue gentilmente dirigido hacia el lugar donde podría comprarlo.

Al final, mi corazón se inclinó por Vanille. La fragancia -inspirada por barcos de antaño llevando su carga desde tierras remotas- resultaría un maravilloso souvenir de Portugal y un digno tributo a sus ilustres navegantes.

Skinlife – Royal treatment in Lisbon

The sound of fado melds with the smell of freshly ground coffee and blooming magnolias in one of the most charming cities in the world. Ah, beautiful, beautiful Lisbon!

In the neighbourhood of Chiado, barely one block away from A Brasileira, Fernando Pessoa‘s favorite bar, the window of Skinlife attracted my attention. As you can see,  fragrance stores keep crossing my path because -I swear- I was  actually looking for a padaria (bakery) and didn’t intend to purchase any fragrances during this trip. I hesitated for about ten seconds and convinced myself the place would be a welcome shelter from the hot blinding sun. I was not wrong: the interior was fresh, luminous and comfortable.

Skinlife is owned and run by two young and gorgeous Dutch men: Patrick and Dennis. Kind and unpretentious, they let me look around and smell freely but were prompt to help whenever I asked any questions. The Atelier Colognes and Hierbas de Ibiza looked tempting in the Summer heat, but -wait!- there were also some Editions de Parfums over there  (was this the time to splurge and go for Une Rose once and for all?)…and Maison Francis Kurkdjian (ah, the entrancing animalic emanations of Absolue pour le Soir!). A few moments later I had narrowed my selection and was torn between Mona di Orio Musc and Vanille. Since I didn’t want to rush my decision, I distracted myself by browsing at other products (besides perfume, the store offers leather goods from The Guild of Holland, skincare and makeup).

I sat down and spent a good while talking with Patrick while the fragrances dried down. Patrick is also a makeup artist, thus conversation between the two of us flowed easily. Over coffee we chatted about topics as diverse as our favorite lines and creators, bridal makeup and Queen Máxima. The courteous attention I received is not exclusive to customers: a passerby came in asking for a certain mainstream fragrance and was graciously directed to a place where he would be able to purchase it.

In the end, I my heart went for Vanille. The fragrance -inspired by ships of yore carrying exotic goods from remote lands- would make a wonderful souvenir from Portugal and a fitting tribute to its illustrious navigators.
