Perfumería Benegas – Un paraíso dentro del paraíso

No fue la casualidad lo que me llevó a la puerta de Perfumería Benegas.  Durante la planificación de mi viaje (ese larguísimo día y medio) había decidido que quería mimarme con unos productos de baño de Amouage. Mi exhaustiva investigación indicó que Benegas, en la bella, muy bella San Sebastián, sería el lugar correcto. Una tarde, luego de una placentera caminata sobre la suave arena de la Playa de la Concha  me dirigí hacia la calle Garibay.

Perfumería Benegas abrió sus puertas por primera vez en 1908, a la par que San Sebastián se consolidaba como uno de los balnearios más aristocráticos de la Belle Epoque; aún hoy la lujosa tienda continúa en manos de los descendientes de sus fundadores. El espacio es moderno sin arriesgar su aura de tradición. La variedad de marcas ofrecida resulta tan agotadora como exquisita: de Grossmith a Amouage, de Ego Facto a Ormonde Jayne, de Profumum a Maria Lux a Geo F. Trumper…amén de exclusivos de Chanel, Guerlain y Van Cleef. Entre mis preferidas, la combinación de laurel y notas minerales de  Profumum Victrix, el dulzor especiado de Biehl Parfumkunstwerke AL02 y mi ya adorado Interlude. Si no hubiera estado ejercitando (relativas) disciplina y frugalidad, de mil amores habría dilapidado todos mis ahorros allí. El saber que la casa acepta pedidos internacionales  resulta un poderoso canto de sirena.

Ainhoa, vendedora informadísima y cortés, respondió con paciencia todas mis preguntas -que, créanme, no fueron pocas- y me presentó las fragancias propias de la casa: Colonia Benegas y Ssirimiri. La primera es una fórmula tradicional que mezcla tomillo, romero y lavanda con jazmín y azahar; Colonia Benegas  está disponible asimismo en forma de vela, loción para el cuerpo o gel de ducha. Ssirimiri, una ligera fragancia cítrica con fondo amaderado, toma su nombre del Sirimiri, la fina llovizna constante que suele caer sobre San Sebastián. Su caja está decorada con reproducciones de acuarelas que muestran cuatro vistas distintas de la ciudad. La perfumería también ofrece maquillajes, productos para el cuidado de la piel y elegantes accesorios (me gustaron especialmente los collares y necessaires de Etro).

Me despedí con la esperanza de regresar pronto a pasar unas vacaciones enteras en esta magnífica ciudad vasca y, por supuesto, repetir mi visita a Benegas. ¡Agur!

Perfumería Benegas – A paradise within Paradise

It wasn’t chance that drove me to the doorstep of Perfumería Benegas. During the planning of my trip (that long day and a half) I had decided I wanted to  spoil myself with some Amouage bath products. My careful research indicated that Benegas, in the very beautiful San Sebastián, would be the right place to do so. One afternoon, after a pleasant walk over the smooth sands of  the Playa de la Concha, I headed towards Garibay street.

Perfumería Benegas opened its doors for the first time in 1908, when San Sebastián was establishing itself as one of the most aristocratic seaside resorts of the Belle Epoque; this luxurious shop is still run by the descendants of its founders. The place is modern without betraying its aura of tradition. The array of brands offered is as dizzying as it is exquisite: from Grossmith to Amouage, from Ego Facto to Ormonde Jayne, from Profumum to Maria Lux to Geo F. Trumper…plus Chanel, Guerlain and Van Cleef exclusifs. Among my favorites, the pairing of laurel and mineral notes in  Profumum Victrix, the sweet spiciness of Biehl Parfumkunstwerke AL02 and my already beloved Interlude. Had I not been exercising (relative) discipline and frugality, I would have happily blown my life savings there. Knowing the house accepts international orders is one powerful siren song.

Ainhoa, a knowledgeable and courteous saleslady, patiently answered all of my questions -which, believe me,  were not few- and introduced me to the house’s own creations: Colonia Benegas and Ssirimiri. The first one is a traditional formula that blends thyme, rosemary and lavender with jasmine and orange blossom; Colonia Benegas is also available as a candle, body lotion and shower gel. Ssirimiri, a light citrusy fragrance on a woody base is called after the Sirimiri, the thin constant drizzle that usually falls upon San Sebastián. Its box is decorated with reprodutions of watercolor paintings depicting four different views of the city. Perfumería Benegas also offers makeup, skincare products and stylish accesories (I especially liked the Etro necklaces and neccessaires).

I left in the hopes of spending soon a good long holiday in this magnificent Basque city and, of course, repeating my visit to Benegas. Agur!
