El día que olí por primera vez gálbano -solamente gálbano- sentí un flechazo. Esta materia prima me deslumbró con su cuerpo terroso, vestido de frescura verde. No es sucio ni polvoroso sino que se acerca mucho más al olor de una arveja fresca recién partida. Hasta a veces se le encuentran matices dulzones (como de iris, violeta o zanahoria).
Este año el perfumista Pierre Guillaume trajo al mundo a Coton Egyptien, un eau de toilette unisex que justamente tiene al gálbano como su ingrediente principal. Éste es engalanado con una sencilla túnica de flor de algodón (¡sin reminiscencia alguna a perfumantes de ropa!), la cual le aporta luminosidad y allana las asperezas terrosas. Todo ésto sobre una discreta base de madera de cedro, tierna y dulcemente almizclada (hasta encuentro por ahí unos acentos de haba tonka y azahar).
Si pensamos en una fragancia limpia, verde y almizclada seguramente la asociemos de inmediato con el verano. Sin embargo, yo usaría este perfume de Phaedon en climas frescos (justamente, el invierno acaba de comenzar por aquí) pues tiene la virtud de aportar calidez a pesar de su ligereza. Como copos de algodón.

Phaedon Coton Egyptien – Galbanum wears cotton
The first time that I smelled galbanum -plain galbanum– I felt a crush (love at first sniff!). This raw material dazzled me with its earthy body dressed in green freshness. It’s not dirty or dusty but much closer to the scent of freshly cut green peas. Sometimes I can detect sweetish undertones (such as iris, violet or carrot).
This year perfumer Pierre Guillaume gave birth to Coton Egyptien, a unisex eau de toilette that precisely has galbanum as its main ingredient. It is decked out with a simple cotton flower tunic (without any reminiscence of clothes perfuming agents!), which gives luminosity and also smoothes the earthy roughness. All this on a discrete base note of cedarwood, and a tender sweet musky hue (… I find out there are tonka bean and orange blossoms accents too).
If we think of a clean, green and musky fragrance we’ll probably associate it with summer. However, I would wear this Phaedon perfume in cool weather (precisely, Winter just began here) because it has the virtue of providing warmth despite its lightness. Much like cotton balls.
