En el año 2009, la casa de joyería francesa Van Cleef & Arpels lanzó su línea exclusiva de perfumes: Collection Extraordinaire. Cada uno de los seis integrantes de esta distinguida familia fue creado por un nariz diferente. La fragancia de la cual les voy a hablar hoy es Orchidée Vanille, compuesta por la perfumista siria Randa Hammami.
Hay cierta tendencia con la vainilla como ingrediente de fragancias: suele ser usado de maneras muy burdas, rayando en un aromatizante culinario más que en la obra de destreza que se espera de un perfumista. Pero afortunadamente, esta es una de las excepciones. Si tuviera que definir este eau de parfum en pocas palabras, diría que es un floral-gourmand femenino y estiloso. Es sutil y ligero pero a la vez persistente, sin perder jamás la elegancia.
Hammami trabajó un absoluto de vainilla para que pueda apreciarse en diferentes fases. Al principio, las notas de litchi y mandarina me recuerdan a la salida au debouché del clásico eau de toilette Royal Bain (Caron). Luego de esa faceta frutal, se abre la floral con el aporte de la rosa búlgara y de la violeta. Pareciera olerse un iris por ahí, apolvado y con acentos de zanahoria. El cierre es ambarado y levemente cremoso: un blend de cedro, almizcle y notas balsámicas.
Imagino que lo usaría una mujer que no necesita recargarse de accesorios, ropa y maquillaje para definir su estilo. Alguien de exquisito y austero gusto cuyo minimalismo no pasa desapercibido.

Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Orchidee Vanille – Stylish and minimalist vanilla
In 2009, French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels launched Collection Extraordinaire, its exclusive line of perfumes. This distinguished family has six members and each of them was created by a different nose. The fragrance which I will talk about today is Orchidée Vanille, composed by Syrian perfumer Randa Hammami.
There is some trend about vanilla -as an ingredient fragrances-: it is usually used in very rude ways, bordering on a culinary flavoring rather than with the skill expected from a perfumer. But fortunately, this is one of the exceptions. If I had to define this eau de parfum in a few words, I would say that is a gourmand floral, feminine and stylish. It’s subtle and light and yet persistent, it never loose its elegance.
Hammami has worked the vanilla absolute in a way that it can be appreciated in different phases. First notes of lychee and mandarin make the classic Caron Royal Bain’s au debouché spring to mind. After that fruity facet, one more floral is opened by Bulgarian rose and violet notes. It seems like the scent of iris, with its characteristic powdery carrot accents. The drydrown is creamy and lightly ambered: a blend of cedar, musk and balsamic notes.
I imagine the kind of woman who would wear this perfume, someone who doesn’t need a lot of accessories, clothing and makeup to define her style. Someone with exquisite and austere taste and whose minimalism does not go unnoticed.
