Puredistance I – Gracia asombrosa

Usualmente pruebo las fragancias durante varios días antes de anotar mis impresiones sobre ellas. No fue el caso hoy. Varias personas pararon a mirarme en la calle mientras abría febrilmente el paquete que recién había recogido de la oficina de correo. No podía esperar: tan pronto llegué a casa, me perfumé con Puredistance I. Mi curiosidad por de esta línea había sido espoleada al leer varias reseñas, especialmente las de Birgit, en Olfactoria’s Travels.

Puredistance fue fundada por Jan Ewoud Vos, quien colaboró con los narices Annie Buzantian y Roja Dove. La oficinas centrales de la compañía están en Holanda, las fragancias se crean en New York y Londres -donde están radicados la Srta. Buzantian y el Sr. Dove– y su boutique exclusiva se encuentra en Viena. El lema de la casa es ”elegancia atemporal”.  Me intrigaba saber cómo Puredistance podía expresar ”elegancia atemporal” en estos líquidos aparentemente mágicos y si dicha elegancia vendría acompañada, también, por una inmensa belleza. 

La elección de lugar para la boutique no es fortuita. Si hay una ciudad en el mundo que encarna la elegancia, es la alegre Viena. La elegancia vienesa es discreta: nada ni nadie claman por atención; cada cosa y cada quien se deslizan perfecta y felizmente en su lugar. 

Los perfumes Puredistance -desde el packaging al líquido- reflejan un lujo moderno y chic. Nada en ellos es excesivo. Las cuatro fragancias  se me antojan levísimas y sin fisuras ni uniones (incluso la más robusta M), como si fueran tejidos vanguardistas. Comparten también una cierta serenidad. Aunque su carácter es clásico, parecen hechas con materias sobrenaturales, tal es su ligereza. La magia reside en la construcción.

Puredistance I fue compuesto por Annie Buzantian; se dice que lo había creado originalmente como su perfume privado. Cuando una maestra perfumista crea un perfume para sí misma, lo mejor que una puede hacer es sentarse y olisquear. Glicinas y alverjillas vinieron a mi mente no bien lo apliqué. Después llegaron la rosa y la magnolia…oh, sí, la magnolia, tan pura y carnal a la vez. Su tinte alimonado aquí se casa con notas cítricas  cálidas, efervescentes, con toques de miel. La magnolia rige la composición hasta que mucho, mucho más tarde, se disuelve en un fondo de ámbar y almizcle blanco. Fresco y cálido, pleno pero ligero, I puede sonar como un juego de contradicciones, pero rezuma armonía.

Puredistance I es suave y femenino -muy suave y muy femenino- pero, sobre todo, es luminoso. Tiene una cualidad vagamente acuática, de la misma manera en que las perlas son acuáticas. Y, al igual que una perla, es suave, redondo y juega con la luz. Este no es un perfume fragmentario: es un todo, una unidad perfecta, un mundo en sí mismo. El angélico I parece flotar, suspendido en tiempo y espacio.

Puredistance I – Amazing grace

I usually give fragrances a few wearings before I write down my impressions on them. Not today. More than a few people stared at me on the street as I feverishly tore open the package I had just retrieved from the post office. I  couldn’t wait: as soon as I arrived home I dabbed myself with Puredistance I. My curiosity about this line had been spurred by many reviews, especially those of Birgit, at Olfactoria’s Travels.

Puredistance was founded by Jan Ewoud Vos, who collaborated with noses Annie Buzantian and Roja Dove. The company’s headquarters are in the Netherlands, the fragrances are created in New York and London -where Ms. Buzantian and Mr. Dove are based- and their exclusive boutique is located in Vienna. The motto of the house is ”timeless elegance”.   I was intrigued: How would Puredistance express ”timeless elegance” in these apparently magical juices?  Would said elegance come in the company of peerless beauty?

The choice of place for the boutique isn’t fortuitous. If there is one city in the world that epitomizes elegance, such is the joyful Vienna. Viennese elegance is understated: nothing and no one screams for attention; everything and everyone glides perfectly, happily in place. 

 The Puredistance fragrances -from packaging to juice- reflect modern,  chic luxury. There is nothing excessive about them. All four  perfumes appear weightless and seamless to me (even the more robust M), like fine avant-garde textiles. They also share a certain serenity. Although their character is classic, they seem to be made of unearthly raw materials, such is their airiness. The magic lies in the construction.

 Puredistance I was composed by Annie Buzantian; it is said she had originally created it as her private perfume. When a master perfumer creates a fragrance for herself one better sits down and takes a sniff. Wisterias and sweet peas sprung to my mind as I dabbed it on. Then came rose and magnolia…oh, yes, magnolia, so pure and carnal at a time. Its lemony tinge is here married with warm, fizzy, honeyed citrus notes. The magnolia rules the composition that much, much later fades into an ambery musky background. Warm and fresh, full yet light, I sounds like a game of contradictions, but it exudes harmony.

Puredistance I is soft and feminine -very soft and very feminine- but above all it is luminous. There is an aquatic quality to it, but vaguely so, in the same way a pearl is aquatic. And, much like a pearl, it is smooth, round and plays with the light. This is not a fragmentary perfume: it is a whole, a perfect unity, a world in itself. The seraphic I seems to float, suspended in time and place.
