Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal – Cielo y tierra

Una noche de la semana pasada me reuní a cenar con viejos amigos. Era muy tarde, cuando tomé un taxi de regreso a casa. Al indicarle al chofer a dónde nos dirigíamos, contestó “Déjeme decirle que su perfume es muy rico. Lo noté en cuanto subió”. Me sentí un poco desconcertada, ya que había olvidado incluso de que me había aplicado perfume. Primero me devané los sesos, luego busqué dentro de mi bolso y encontré una muestra de Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal, la fragancia con la que me había rociado horas antes. “¿Este es el olor que dice usted?” pregunté mientras le alcanzaba el frasquito. “Sí, ese”. “¿Quiere que le ponga un poco?”. Y eso hice. Una nube radiante de incienso llenó el auto y de cierto modo pareció iluminar la noche.

Rock Crystal es parte de la colección Parfums de Pierres Poèmes creada por Olivier Durbano. Olivier, joyero de profesión, está familiarizado con las piedras, su simbología y las emociones que despiertan.

El cristal de roca o cuarzo hialino se conoce desde la antigüedad. Resultaba un material conveniente para tallar y, debido a su belleza límpida, era tratado como una gema. Los egipcios le atribuían propiedades esotéricas. Plinio el Viejo lo consideraba hielo que no podía derretirse.  Más tarde, durante la Edad Media, se utilizó especialmente en la creación de objetos religiosos.

El incienso ha encontrado uso ritual en muchas culturas a través de los siglos. El humo producido al quemar esta resina aromática elevaba las plegarias del pueblo a sus dioses.

Teniendo en cuenta que tanto el cristal de roca como el incienso son casi universalmente simbólicos de la unión entre los mortales y sus deidades, no sorprende que este perfume se construya en torno a esa nota.

Al oler Rock Crystal por primera vez, me resultó extrañamente familiar. Luego de algunos usos, me dí cuenta de que me recordaba al olor de la (relativamente) austera y despojada Iglesia de los Capuchinos, en Viena. Los recuerdos que guardo de mi visita son vagos, casi meramente olfativos. No había nadie más dentro de la iglesia. Los aromas del incienso y  maderas preciosas inundaban el lugar y jugaban con los rayos de sol invitando a la introspección.

Rock Crystal es potente y luminoso. En él se equilibra ligereza con terrosidad. Si el incienso sugiere sacralidad, entonces la robustez prestada por el sándalo y cedro corporizan lo terreno. Cualquier severidad posible se aclara con las notas de flor de naranjo, pimienta y cardamomo que convierten este perfume en algo alegre, si bien meditativo.

Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal – Heaven and earth

One evening last week I had dinner with some old friends. It was very late when I took a taxi back home. When I told the driver where I was heading, he replied  “Let me tell you you smell wonderful. I noticed it as soon as you entered the car”. I felt a bit puzzled as I had forgotten I was wearing any scent at all. First I racked my brains, then I looked into my handbag and found a sample of Olivier Durbano Rock Crystal, the fragrance I had spritzed myself with hours earlier. “Is this the scent you mean?” I asked as I handed him the vial. “Yes, it is” “Shall I spritz you with some of it?” and I so I did. A radiant cloud of incense filled the car and somehow seemed to give illuminate the night.

Rock Crystal belongs to the Parfums de Pierres Poèmes collection created by Olivier Durbano. Olivier, a jeweller by trade, is well acquainted with the stones, their symbolism and the emotions they awake.

Rock crystal or  hialine quartz has been known since antiquity. It was a convenient material for carving and was treated like a gem due to its limpid beauty. The Egyptians attributed esoteric properties to it. Pliny the Elder  regarded it as ice that could not be melted.  Later, during the Middle Ages it was especially used in the creation of religious objects.

Frankincense has found ritual use in many cultures through the centuries. The smoke produced by the burning of this aromatic resin would elevate the prayers of the people to the gods.

Seeing that both rock crystal and frankincense are almost universally symbolic of the union between mortals and their deities, it won’t come as a surprise that this fragrance is constructed around that note.

When I first smelled Rock Crystal, I found it strangely familiar. After a few wearings, I realized it reminisced me of the smell of the (relatively) austere and unadorned Capuchin Church in Vienna. The memories I keep are vague, almost merely olfactory. There was no one else inside the church. The scent of incense and precious woods filled the place and played with the sun rays  inviting to introspection.

Rock Crystal (the fragrance) is luminous and powerful. It balances airiness and earthiness. If frankincense suggests sacrality, then the robustness lent by sandalwood and cedarwood embodies the terrene. Any sternness is brightened by notes of orange flower, pepper and cardamom, rendering this fragrance joyful if still meditative.
