Como amante de la Historia y los perfumes de antaño, no pude evitar rendirme ante la maison Oriza L. Legrand (no descansaré hasta posar mis manos sobre una botella del atalcado Jardins d’Armide).
Esta casa fue fundada en París en 1720 por Fargeon Aîné, Perfumista y Destilador del Rey (Luis XV) y Su Corte. Cuenta la leyenda que Fargeon tenía en su poder las recetas de belleza de la afamada cortesana Ninon de Lenclos lo que, por supuesto, hizo maravillas por su ya buena reputación.
El nombre Oriza, que a algunos sonará extraño, encuentra su origen en la denominación científica del arroz (Oryza Sativa), un ingrediente clave en los polvos faciales de la época.
A través de su larga historia, Oriza L. Legrand fue distinguida con varios premios a la excelencia, incluida una medalla dorada en la Exposición Universal de París de 1889. Hace unos pocos años, los propietarios actuales –Hugo Lambert y Franck Belaiche– decidieron revivir la marca. Investigamos el catálogo de Oriza durante varios meses y maduramos el proyecto de revivir la Casa con mucho cuidado. Cuanto más descubríamos acerca de Oriza, más nos seducían su historia y su tremenda paleta olfativa. Eventualmente, el revivir la Maison Oriza L. Legrand se convirtió en un sueño y una obsesión.
-¿Por qué eligieron a la experta Elisabeth de Feydeau para la reconstrucción de los perfumes?
Elisabeth es una amiga personal y partidaria temprana de este proyecto. De todos modos, en el origen del renacimiento de Oriza estamos sólo Franck y yo. Investigamos el catálogo y los ricos archivos de la Casa y seleccionamos con pasión qué perfumes recrearíamos. Más tarde, Elisabeth se ofreció amablemente a escribir un prefacio para la website y el catálogo de Oriza.
-Entiendo que algunas de las fragancias son reconstrucciones muy cercanas a los originales mientras que otras son interpretaciones modernas ¿Por qué es así?
Déjà le Printemps es uno de los únicos dos perfumes que hemos actualizado. Fue creado en 1920 y sentimos que era importante modernizar el perfume y traer una nota contemporánea que se corresponda con nuestro moderno sentido del olfato y a la vez se mantenga fiel a sus orígenes. Todas las demás fragancias, excepto Relique d’Amour, son muy cercanas a su composición original. Como es de esperarse, la diferencia clave es que se emplean materias primas modernas.
-¿Qué valores y estándares de calidad ha mantenido la Casa a través de los siglos?
Oriza tiene una larga tradición de innovación olfativa y tecnológica. Este valor permanece en el corazón de nuestro pensar el presente y el futuro.
A través de la historia de Oriza, la casa ha aprendido a satisfacer a los clientes más exigentes y delicados mediante el desarrollo de perfumes sutiles y exquisitos. Luis XV y su Corte, por ejemplo, estaban particularmente ávidos por las composiciones de Oriza. La Casa también fue proveedor oficial de la Corte Imperial de Rusia.
Hoy permanecemos dedicados a la creación de productos lujosos y exquisitos. Todos ellos están creados por nosotros y trabajados aquí, en Francia, empleando materias primas de la más alta calidad.
-¿En qué aspectos es intransigente?
Como creadores franceses, creemos en apoyar la excelencia del trabajo artesanal francés. Todos nuestros productos están hechos a mano por algunos de los mejores artesanos de sus rubros respectivos. Esto asegura la autenticidad y la calidad constante de todo lo que hacemos. Calidad y originalidad son el ethos de la Casa.
-¿Puedo preguntarle si tiene un favorito dentro de los perfumes de la Casa?
Relique d’Amour es mi preferido personal por sus evocaciones poderosas y únicas del pasado. Es también el perfume que resultó más complejo de re-crear.
-¿Cómo definiría a su cliente típico?
Nuestra clientela es muy diversa. Sin embargo comparten el ser personas curiosas, de buen gusto que buscan fragancias únicas e inusuales.
-¿Cuán importante es el perfume en su vida diaria?
Los perfumes son, ante todo, una evocación para mí. Son un escape, una manera de viajar a través del tiempo y el espacio y entrar a mundos refinados.
-¿Cuáles son su planes inmediatos?
¡Tenemos tantos! Nuestro foco está actualmente puesto en los próximos perfumes que queremos revivir.
Nuestro perfume más reciente, Horizon, será lanzado en noviembre. Las ricas notas de ámbar y tabaco rubio llegarán a tiempo para aportar calidez al invierno. También estamos encantados de presentar nuestra primera línea de cosméticos. Está hecha totalmente a mano en el sur de Francia usando materiales orgánicos.

Parfums Oriza L. Legrand – From the Court of the Bien-Aimé to present day Paris
As a lover of History and fragrances of the days of yore, I couldn’t help but fall for maison Oriza L. Legrand (I won’t rest until I lay my hands on a bottle of their powdery Jardins d’Armide).
This house was founded in Paris in 1720 by Fargeon Aîné, Parfumer and Distiller to the King (Louis XV) and His Court. Legend goes that Fargeon had in his possession the beauty recipes of famed courtesan Ninon de Lenclos which, of course, did wonders for his already good reputation.
The name Oriza, which might sound strange to some, finds its origin in the scientific denomination of rice (Oryza Sativa), at the time a key ingredient in face powders.
Throughout its vast history, Oriza L. Legrand was distinguished with several excellence awards, including a golden medal at the Paris World Fair of 1889. A few years ago, current owners Hugo Lambert and Franck Belaiche decided to resurrect the brand. I thank the charming Monsieur Lambert for taking the time to answer my questions.
-Why did you decide to revive Maison Oriza L. Legrand? How important is this revival in terms of cultural heritage?
House Oriza L.Legrand is a dream for any perfume lover. Its rich history spans over 200 years and perfectly illustrates French tradition and excellence in luxury craftsmanship. We researched Oriza‘s catalogue for many months and matured the project of reviving the House very carefully. The more we discovered about Oriza, the more we were wooed to its history and tremendous olfactive palette.
Eventually reviving Maison Oriza L. Legrand became a dream and an obsession.
-Why did you choose expert Elisabeth de Feydeau for reconstructing the fragrances?
Elisabeth is a personal friend and an early supporter of our project. However it was only Franck and me at the origin of Oriza‘s rebirth. We have researched the House’s rich archives and catalogue and passionately selected which fragrances to recreate.
Later, Elisabeth kindly offered to preface Oriza‘s website and catalogue.
-I understand some fragrances are very close reconstructions of the originals while others are modern interpretations. Why is this?
Déjà le Printemps is one of the only two perfume that was actualized. It was created in 1920 and it felt important to modernize the fragrance and bring a contemporary note that fits our modern sense of smell whilst remaining faithful to its origins. All other fragrances but Relique d’Amour are very close to their original composition. As you can expect the key difference is that they use modern raw materials.
-What values and quality standards has the House kept through the centuries?
Oriza has a long tradition for innovating both olfactively and technologically. This value remains at the heart of our thinking for the present and the future.
Throughout Oriza‘s history the house has learned to please the most delicate and demanding customers by developing subtle and exquisite scents. Louis the 15th and his Court were for instance particularly avid of Oriza‘s compositions.The House was also the official supplier of the Imperial Court of Russia.
Today we remain dedicated to creating luxurious and exquisite products. All of them are created by us and crafted here in France using the highest quality raw materials.
-What factors are you uncompromising about?
As French creators we believe in leveraging the excellence of French craftsmanship. All our products are handmade by some of the best artisans in their respective trade. This ensures the authenticity and constant quality of everything we make.
Quality and originality are the ethos of the House.
-May I ask if you have a favorite among the fragrances from the House?
Relique d’Amour is my personal favourite fragrance for its unique and powerful evocations of the past. It is also the perfume that proved the most complex to re-create.
-How would you define your typical customer?
Our clientele is very diverse. However they have in common to be curious, tasteful people who look for unique and rare fragrances.
-How important is fragrance in your everyday life?
Fragrances are first and foremost an evocation for me. They are an escape, a way to travel through time and space, and enter refined worlds.
-What are your immediate plans?
We have so many! Our current focus is on selecting the next perfumes we want to revive.
Our latest fragrance, Horizon, will be launched in November. The rich amber and blond tobacco notes will arrive in time to bring warmth to the winter.
We are also delighted to introduce our first range of cosmetics. It is entirely handmade in Southern France using organic materials.
