Ante nuestras narices – 10 Excelentes perfumes mainstream

Motivada por la curiosidad olfativa he arrasado con los placards de mi familia, visitado mercados de pulgas y viejas perfumerías en busca de perfumes discontinuos. Trato de probar tantas creaciones de nicho y lujo como puedo, pero la verdad es que existen opciones excelentes en las perfumerías y tiendas locales.

Hoy comparto 10 de mis fragancias mainstream favoritas. Todavía están en producción y resultan fáciles de encontrar. Como bonus, no se huelen a cada paso en la calle.

Thierry Mugler Alien Esta fragancia, creada por Dominique Ropion y Laurent Bruyere combina jazmín con maderas y ámbar. El resultado es cálido, espeso, majestuoso. Superpuesta con la espesa crema corporal, es puro lujo. 

Bulgari Omnia Perfumer El narizAlberto Morillas creó este gourmand especiado y discreto. Notas de té de masala, chocolate blanco y sándalo logran la dosis justa de dulzor. 

Kenzo Jungle Originariamente llamado L’Elephant este eau de parfum, creado por Ropion, es un festín para los sentidos. Cardamomo, clavo de olor, comino, mango y patchouli nos transportan a la India sin escalas.

Azzaro Pour Homme Albahaca y anís salpican a este clásico fougere para caballeros. Masculino, elegante y a un precio decente. Qué más se puede pedir?

Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar Este eau de parfum de inspiración retro parece una versión joven y menos melancólica de L’Heure Bleue.

Lalique Encre Noire Un vetiver oscuro y amaderado -creación de Nathalie Lorson- que pronto se convirtió en un favorito de culto.

Sisley Eau de Campagne Intensamente verde, es un soplo de aire fresco con notas de albahaca y hojas de tomate. Jean-Claude Ellena en su mejor momento.

L de Lolita Lempicka La sensualidad característica de Maurice Roucel brilla en este oriental fresco con tonalidades saladas. Si les gusta Musc Ravageur, de Roucel, se impone probarlo.

Dior Dune Usualmente inadvertido en la colección Dior, Dune es un ámbar floral y seco que parece acariciar la piel. 

Hermes un Jardin sur le Nil Una fragancia chispeante y alegre que transita fácilmente de la oficina al gimnasio al parque. Sus refrescantes notas de pomelo, mango verde  e incienso lo convierten en una opción bienvenida en los calurosos días de verano.

In front of our nose – 10 Excellent mainstream fragrances

Moved by olfactory curiosity I have been known to raid my family’s closets, visit flea markets and old fragrance shops in search of discontinued perfume.  I try to sample as much niche and luxury creations as I can, but truth is there are some excellent options at your local parfumerie or department store.  

Today I share 10 of my favorite mainstream fragrances. They are still in production and easy to find. As a bonus, you will not be smelling them on everyone else.

Thierry Mugler Alien This fragrance, created by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere combines jasmine with woods and amber. The result is warm, thick, majestic. Paired with the ultra rich body cream, it is pure luxury. 

Bulgari Omnia Nose Alberto Morillas created this spicy yet discreet gourmand. Notes of masala tea, white chocolate and sandalwood make for the perfect amount of sweetness.

Kenzo Jungle Originally called L’Elephant this eau de parfum, created by Ropion, is a feast for the senses. Cardamom, cloves, cumin, mango and patchouli take the wearer on an instant trip to India.

Azzaro Pour Homme Basil and aniseed spike this classic gentleman’s fougere. Masculine, elegant and decently priced. What else could one ask for?

Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar This retro-inspired eau de parfum seems like a younger and less melancholy version of L’Heure Bleue.

Lalique Encre Noire A dark and woody vetiver -created by Nathalie Lorson- that soon became a cult favorite.

Sisley Eau de Campagne Intensely green, it is a breath of fresh air with notes of basil and tomato leaf. Jean-Claude Ellena at his best.

L de Lolita Lempicka Maurice Roucel’s trademark sensuality shines in this fresh oriental with salty nuances. If you enjoy Roucel’s Musc Ravageur, give this a try.

Dior Dune Dior’s unsung hero is a dry, floral amber that seems to caress the wearer’s skin.

Hermes un Jardin sur le Nil A sparkling and cheerful fragrance that transitions easily from the office to the gym to the park. Refreshing notes of  grapefruit, green mango and incense make it a welcome option on hot Summer weather.

10 Rosas que NO nos recuerdan a nuestra abuela

Las rosas suelen llegar acompañadas por el temido estigma de “perfume de abuela”. Aunque estamos felices de portar muchos de los perfumes que usaron nuestras abuelas y bisabuelas y conocemos muchas mujeres maduras que huelen maravillosamente, hoy nos gustaría compartir 10 rosas que no nos recuerdan en absoluto a la Granny del canario Tweety.

Lalique Perles: Una rosa amaderada, con toques de pimienta y fondo de patchouli, esta creación de Nathalie Lorson es seca aunque transparente y alegre. La disfrutamos particularmente en días cálidos.

Hermes Kelly Caleche: Probablemente la más interesante y bella de las últimas creaciones de Jean-Claude Ellena, Kelly Caleche une rosas, iris y cuero suave. Su aroma nos recuerda a un bolso de fina piel donde se han guardado cosméticos de lujo.

Bond No.9 West Side: Este cálido y licoroso elixir mezcla rosas, vainilla, ámbar y almizcle. Percibimos también una distintiva nota de tabaco.  Reconfortante, versátil y no demasiado formal es uno de los perfumes que portamos más a menudo.

Editions de Parfums Lipstick Rose: Una creación de Ralf Schwieger que, glamorosa y lúdica a la vez, evoca el olor del lápiz labial con sus notas de violeta, rosa y frambuesa.  Para ser llevado con confianza y sentido del humor. Rociar con ligereza.

Chanel Les Exclusifs No.18: Quizás la fragancia más moderna y minimalista de la línea Les Exclusifs, No. 18 abre con una penetrante (y desconcertante) nota de ambrette, pero pronto muta en una adorable rosa frutal y almizclada. Es bastante sutil, por lo tanto recomendamos una aplicación generosa.

Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose: Inspirada por las rosas que florecían en los templos de  Paestum, en el sur de Italia, nos brinda un enorme estallido de pimienta y mirra, seguido de incienso y rosas oscuras. Sería algo así como la hermana mayor de Lalique Perles.

Juliette Has a Gun Miss Charming: Una rosa frutal y ligeramente azucarada, esta coqueta fragancia pretende parecer inocente, pero su fondo almizclado demuestra que no lo es tanto. Nos encanta para aquellos días en que queremos oler preciosamente aniñadas.

Czech and Speake Dark Rose: Oud, rosa y patchouli. A no buscar mucho más lejos si se desea una rosa seductora y muy, muy oscura. Una fragancia madura, compuesta al estilo de Oriente Medio, Dark Rose -pariente cercana de Midnight Oud (Juliette Has a Gun) y Black Aoud (Montale)-  hace honor a su nombre.

Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum: Almendras, rosa, miel y vainilla juegan juntas en este gourmand suave y adictivo que se inspira en el delicioso loukhoum turco.  Es empolvado y dulce, pero no empalagoso. No somos las mayores adeptas a los gourmands, pero este nos ha convencido.

YSL Baby Doll: Uno de los primeros (y aún hoy uno de los mejores) florales frutados existentes, aquí la rosa se mezcla con pomelo y grosellas. Dulzón pero ácido, es lúdico y joven sin volverse vulgar.

10 roses that do NOT remind us of our Grandma 

Roses tend to come with the dreaded “grandmother’s perfume” stigma. Even though we are happy to wear many of the fragrances our grandmothers and great grandmothers wore and we know many mature ladies who smell heavenly, today we would like to share 10 roses that don’t evoke Tweety Bird’s Granny in the least.

Lalique Perles: A woody and peppery rose with patchouli base notes, this Nathalie Lorson creation is dry, yet transparent and cheerful. We particularly enjoy wearing it in warm weather.

Hermes Kelly Caleche: Probably the most interesting and beautiful of Jean-Claude Ellena‘s latest creations, Kelly Caleche blends roses, iris and soft leather. Its smell reminds us of a fine purse that has been used to carry luxury cosmetics.

Bond No.9 West Side: This warm  and boozy elixir blends roses, vanilla, amber and musk. We also get a distinctive tobacco note. Cozy, versatile and not too formal. One of the fragrances we wear most often.

Editions de Parfums Lipstick Rose:  A Ralf Schwieger creation which, glamorous and playful at a time, evokes the smell of rose-scented lipstick with its violet, rose and raspberry notes. Wear it with confidence and a sense of humour. Spritz lightly.

Chanel Les Exclusifs No.18: Maybe the most modern and minimalistic fragrance in the Les Exclusifs line, No. 18 opens with a disconcertingly sharp ambrette note but soon morphs into a lovely fruity and musky rose. It is quite subtle, so generous application is recommended.

Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose: Inspired by the roses that would bloom at the temples in Paestum, Southern Italy,  this gives us a huge blast of pepper and myrrh, followed by incense and dark roses. Think of it as Lalique Perles’ older sister.

Juliette Has a Gun Miss Charming: A fruity, slightly sugary rose, this flirty fragrance appears to be naive, but its musky drydown makes it less so. We love this on days when we just want to smell preciously girly.

Czech and Speake Dark Rose: Oud, rose and patchouli. If you are looking for a dark, very dark, seductive rose, look no further than this. A mature fragrance composed in Mid-Eastern style, this one is in the same vein as Midnight Oud and Black Aoud. It truly honors its name.

Keiko Mecheri Loukhoum: Almonds, rose and honey play together in this soft and addictive gourmand, inspired by delicious Turkish loukhoum. It is powdery and sweet but never cloying. We are not the biggest fans of gourmands but this one has won us over.

YSL Baby Doll: One of the first (and still one of the best) fruity florals out there. Here rose mingles with grapefruit and redcurrant. Sweet and tart, this is playful and young without ever becoming vulgar.

Lalique Perles de Lalique – Perlas, pimienta y rosas

¡Ah, Perles de Lalique, mi fiel compañero! Prueba fehaciente de que  las fragancias comerciales no necesariamente huelen aburridas, genéricas y baratas.

Despertó mi intriga no bien lo probé en la perfumería, pero -optando por algo más familiar- compré el avainillado Lalique Le Parfum. En el curso de las semanas siguientes, volví unas cuantas veces con la intención de insistir con Perles. Aun indecisa, intuía que la fragancia tenía algo especial. Me tomó unas cuantas visitas, pero desde aquel día decisivo, no he tenido arrepentimientos: lo llevo de igual manera en invierno y en verano (aprecio particularmente su cualidad seca en días calurosos), me resulta suficientemente limpio para el trabajo aunque sensual como para una salida romántica, es transparente Y persistente. No es difícil entender por qué lo he adoptado como caballito de batalla.

Creado por Nathalie Lorson en 2006, Perles es descrito como un chipre moderno. Me cuesta un poco entender a los ”chipres modernos” como “chipres verdaderos” así que prefiero clasificarlo como un transparente floral especiado  y amaderado; aerodinámico si no minimalista en carácter.

Notas que tradicionalmente son densas aquí se tornan aireadas, como si una brisa soplara a través de la pimienta, la rosa, el vetiver y patchouli, dispersando su aroma.  Luego del estallido pimentoso inicial, el desarrollo es bastante lineal, con un final amaderado que creo cortesía del iso E super. La rosa búlgara  tiene una marcada presencia, pero este no es un perfume típicamente femenino. En absoluto. Insisto en mi creencia de que los perfumes no tienen género y este es un cabal ejemplo. Perles de Lalique bien podría ser la hija pequeña de Terre d’Hermes y Parfum Sacré; la hermana alegre de Paestum Rose, que cambia la solemnidad por un poquito de insolencia y el misterio por risitas.

Este perfume es fácil de encontrar y puede ser adquirido por un precio razonable. A pesar de su cualidad transparente, la longevidad es sorprendentemente buena.

Lalique Perles de Lalique – Pearls, pepper and roses

Ah, Perles de Lalique, my faithful companion! Concrete proof that mainstream fragrances need not smell boring, generic or cheap.

It got me intrigued as soon as I tried it at the store but -opting for something more familiar- I bought the vanillic Lalique Le Parfum instead. Over the course of the following weeks, I returned a few times in order to try Perles again. Unsure as I was, there was still something special about it. It took me a few visits but, since the decisive day when I purchased it, I have never looked back: I wear it on Winter and Summer alike (its dry quality is enjoyable in hot weather), I find it clean enough for work yet sensual enough for a romantic evening, it is both transparent AND persistent. It’s not difficult to understand why I have adopted it.

Created by Nathalie Lorson in 2006, Perles is described as a modern chypre. I have a hard times thinking of “modern chypres” as “true chypres” so I’d rather classify this as a transparent spicy woody floral; streamlined, if not minimalistic in character.

Traditionally dense notes get airy here, as if a breeze was blowing through the pepper, the rose, the vetiver and patchouli, dispersing their scent.  After the initial peppery burst, the development is fairly linear, with a woody drydown I guess courtesy of iso E super. The Bulgarian rose has a marked presence but this is not your typical feminine scent. Not at all. I sustain the belief that fragrance is genderless and this is one wonderful example. Perles de Lalique could well be youngest daughter of Terre d’Hermes and Parfum Sacré; Paestum Rose‘s cheerful sister, who trades the solemnity for a little bit of insolence and the mystery for giggles.

This fragrance is easily available  and can be purchased at a reasonable price. Despite its transparent quality, I find the lasting power surprisingly good.
