World Perfumery Congress 2014 – La industria del perfume reunida en Deauville

Junio fue uno de los meses más excitantes y ajetreados en lo que va del 2014. Un día me encontraba en Los Angeles y al siguiente estaba a bordo de un avión, camino a Francia. Sí, no había tiempo para jet-lag y esas cosas (a pesar de una diferencia horaria de ¡9 horas!) porque el Congreso Mundial de Perfumería 2014 bienal –World Perfumery Congress (WPC)- estaba por comenzar en Deauville, ciudad norteña emplazada en la Normandía (a 2 horas de París).

El leitmotiv del WPC era “El Futuro de las Fragrancias” y fue organizado por la revista Perfumer & Flavorist y la American Society of Perfumers en el Centre International de Deauville (C.I.D). Fue un gran evento de tres días conformado por conferencias, discusiones de panel y stands exhibidores de proveedores de materias primas, laboratorios y otras organizaciones relacionadas con la industria.

El primer día comenzo con una bienvenida especial por parte del artista Fabian Oefner, quien mostró fotografías asombrosas de cosas invisibles al ojo humano, especialmente perfume atomizado en el aire. Sin embargo, mi tópico favorito de la jornada fue “Educación e Investigación en Fragancias” discutido por un panel de elite: Christophe Laudamiel (Perfumista en el estudio DreamAir ), Dr. Claus Noppeney (Profesor en la Ben University de Ciencias Aplicadas) y Jenny Tillotson (Sensory Design & Technology Ltd, Fundadora de eScent). El panel resaltó la importancia que tienen en la comunicación de los perfumes tanto la comprensión del contexto de uso así como la construcción de sentido.

La segunda jornada fue inaugurada por dos sesiones sobre IFRA (International Fragrance Association). Una de ellas fue realizada por un panel que debatió la cuestión de la secretitud de fórmula y la propiedad intelectual, se llamó “Mejorando la innovación mediante la adecuada protección del Know-How“. Michael Carlos (Presidente de la Division Fragancias de Givaudan) planteó una polémica cuestión: “Todo lo que pasa por nuestros sentidos ¿es susceptible de ser considerado una propiedad intelectual?”. Charles Cronin (Recurso de Infracción de los Derechos de Autor de la Música, University of Southern California) trajo a colación el ejemplo de la fórmula secreta del célebre licor francés Chartreuse.

La entrega de los premios 2014 International Perfumer Award inició el programa del ultimo día. Luego el tema “El futuro de las fragancias” fue analizado por varios expertos. Entre ellos, la perfumista Patricia Nicolaï Michau (Presidente de l’Osmothèque) presentó “La misión de la Osmothèque en la industria de las fragancias actual”. Remarcó el valor crucial que tienen el conocer y el entender el pasado de la perfumeria para poder crear nuevas fragancias. Aquella misma noche, se llevó a cabo una recepción de gala en el espléndido Casino Barrière a modo de broche de oro del congreso de tres días.

Fue una experiencia fabulosa. Asistir al WPC no sólo contribuyó a tener un panorama más amplio y profundo de la industria de las fragancias sino que además me permitió conocer personalmente a gente maravillosa, que comparte la misma pasión por los perfumes. Fue un gran placer el haber conocido a maestros en la materia tales como Maurice Roucel (Symrise) y Ralf Schwieger (Mane), así como también el poder disfrutar de una agradable -incluso conmovedora- charla con la entusiasta y gentil Victoria Frolova (autora del blog Bois de Jasmin).

World Perfumery Congress 2014 – The fragrance industry gathers in Deauville

June was one of the most exciting and restless months of 2014. One day I was in L.A. and the next one I was flying on a plane bound to France. Yes, there was no time for jet-lag and such (despite a 9 hour difference!) because the bi-annual World Perfumery Congress (WPC) 2014 was about to begin in Deauville, a northern city located in the coast of Normandy (2 hours away from Paris).

The leitmotiv of the WPC was “The Future of Fragrance” and the congress was carried out by Perfumer & Flavorist magazine and the American Society of Perfumers at the Centre International de Deauville (C.I.D). It was a three-day major event with conferences, panel discussions and exhibition stands of raw materials suppliers, laboratories and other related organizations.

The first day began with the special welcome of artist Fabian Oefner, who showed amazing pictures of things invisible to human eye, especially perfume atomized in the air. My favorite subject that day, though, was “Fragrance Education and Research” discussed by an elite panel: Christophe Laudamiel (Master Perfumer at DreamAir studios), Dr. Claus Noppeney (Professor at Ben University of Applied Sciences) and Jenny Tillotson (Sensory Design & Technology Ltd, founder of eScent). The panel highlighted the importance of meaning-making and understanding context of use in scent communication.

The second day was headed by IFRA Sessions. One of them was a panel discussion about formula secrecy and intellectual property called “Enhancing Innovation Through the Appropriate Protection of Know-How”. Michael Carlos (President, Givaudan Fragrance Division) set a polemic question: “Does every thing that goes through our senses become an intellectual property?”. Charles Cronin (Music Copyright Infringement Resource, University of Southern California) brought up the example of the secret formula for the famous French liqueur Chartreuse.

On the morning of the third day the 2014 International Perfumer Award took place. Then “The Future of Fragrance” topic was reflected upon by industry experts. Among them, perfumer Patricia Nicolai Michau (President, l’Osmothèque) presented “The Mission of the Osmothèque in Today’s Fragrance Industry”. She marked the critical value of knowing and understanding the past of fragrance in order to create new perfumes. That evening a gala reception was held at the splendid Casino Barrière as a finishing touch to those three days.

It was a fabulous experience. Not only attending the WPC helped me to acquire a wider and deeper idea of the international fragrance industry but also gave me the chance of meeting wonderful people who share this passion for perfume. It was a pleasure meeting masters of the craft such as Maurice Roucel (Symrise) and Ralf Schwieger (Mane) as well as having a nice -even moving- chat with the enthusiastic and kind Victoria Frolova (author of Bois de Jasmin fragrance blog).

Simply Irresistible – 10 (non cutesy) fragrances for St. Valentine’s Day

Saint Valentine’s Day is, to us, an extraneous festivity. Although we -the authors- regard ourselves as romantic, we have never really assimilated it as ours. We just wouldn’t feel comfortable becoming part of the edulcorated cliché of giving/receiving heart-shaped objects (the horror!) or bouquets of red roses. We seize the date, however, as a valid excuse to spend a special evening with our better halves.

Motivada por la curiosidad olfativa he arrasado con los placards de mi familia, visitado mercados de pulgas y viejas perfumerías en busca de perfumes discontinuos. Trato de probar tantas creaciones de nicho y lujo como puedo, pero la verdad es que existen opciones excelentes en las perfumerías y tiendas locales.

Hoy comparto 10 de mis fragancias mainstream favoritas. Todavía están en producción y resultan fáciles de encontrar. Como bonus, no se huelen a cada paso en la calle.

Thierry Mugler Alien Esta fragancia, creada por Dominique Ropion y Laurent Bruyere combina jazmín con maderas y ámbar. El resultado es cálido, espeso, majestuoso. Superpuesta con la espesa crema corporal, es puro lujo.

Bulgari Omnia Perfumer El narizAlberto Morillas creó este gourmand especiado y discreto. Notas de té de masala, chocolate blanco y sándalo logran la dosis justa de dulzor.

Kenzo Jungle Originariamente llamado L’Elephant este eau de parfum, creado por Ropion, es un festín para los sentidos. Cardamomo, clavo de olor, comino, mango y patchouli nos transportan a la India sin escalas.

Azzaro Pour Homme Albahaca y anís salpican a este clásico fougere para caballeros. Masculino, elegante y a un precio decente. Qué más se puede pedir?

Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar Este eau de parfum de inspiración retro parece una versión joven y menos melancólica de L’Heure Bleue.

Lalique Encre Noire Un vetiver oscuro y amaderado -creación de Nathalie Lorson- que pronto se convirtió en un favorito de culto.

Sisley Eau de Campagne Intensamente verde, es un soplo de aire fresco con notas de albahaca y hojas de tomate. Jean-Claude Ellena en su mejor momento.

L de Lolita Lempicka La sensualidad característica de Maurice Roucel brilla en este oriental fresco con tonalidades saladas. Si les gusta Musc Ravageur, de Roucel, se impone probarlo.

Dior Dune Usualmente inadvertido en la colección Dior, Dune es un ámbar floral y seco que parece acariciar la piel.

Hermes un Jardin sur le Nil Una fragancia chispeante y alegre que transita fácilmente de la oficina al gimnasio al parque. Sus refrescantes notas de pomelo, mango verde e incienso lo convierten en una opción bienvenida en los calurosos días de verano.

In front of our nose – 10 Excellent mainstream fragrances

Moved by olfactory curiosity I have been known to raid my family’s closets, visit flea markets and old fragrance shops in search of discontinued perfume. I try to sample as much niche and luxury creations as I can, but truth is there are some excellent options at your local parfumerie or department store.

Today I share 10 of my favorite mainstream fragrances. They are still in production and easy to find. As a bonus, you will not be smelling them on everyone else.

Thierry Mugler Alien This fragrance, created by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere combines jasmine with woods and amber. The result is warm, thick, majestic. Paired with the ultra rich body cream, it is pure luxury.

Bulgari Omnia Nose Alberto Morillas created this spicy yet discreet gourmand. Notes of masala tea, white chocolate and sandalwood make for the perfect amount of sweetness.

Kenzo Jungle Originally called L’Elephant this eau de parfum, created by Ropion, is a feast for the senses. Cardamom, cloves, cumin, mango and patchouli take the wearer on an instant trip to India.

Azzaro Pour Homme Basil and aniseed spike this classic gentleman’s fougere. Masculine, elegant and decently priced. What else could one ask for?

Oscar de la Renta Esprit d’Oscar This retro-inspired eau de parfum seems like a younger and less melancholy version of L’Heure Bleue.

Lalique Encre Noire A dark and woody vetiver -created by Nathalie Lorson- that soon became a cult favorite.

Sisley Eau de Campagne Intensely green, it is a breath of fresh air with notes of basil and tomato leaf. Jean-Claude Ellena at his best.

L de Lolita Lempicka Maurice Roucel’s trademark sensuality shines in this fresh oriental with salty nuances. If you enjoy Roucel’s Musc Ravageur, give this a try.

Dior Dune Dior’s unsung hero is a dry, floral amber that seems to caress the wearer’s skin.

Hermes un Jardin sur le Nil A sparkling and cheerful fragrance that transitions easily from the office to the gym to the park. Refreshing notes of grapefruit, green mango and incense make it a welcome option on hot Summer weather.

Hemos dicho siempre que somos escépticas respecto de la tajante división femenino/masculino, pero es innegable que ciertas notas (y acordes) dibujan trazos de feminidad o masculinidad, según las convenciones de la cultura en la que vivamos.

Proponemos esta lista de 10 excelentes fragancias que abarcan el espectro de masculinidad primitiva a dandy. Cada item de la lista brilla por su singularidad y calidad.

Eau d’Italie Sienne L’Hiver La obra maestra -según sus propias palabras- del maestro Duchaufour. Frío iris, violetas, incienso, heno y maderas.

Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte Notas hesperidadas y herbales se aúnan dando como resultado un agua efímera y vitalizante, tan simple y elegante como su nombre.

Thierry Mugler Cologne Evoca el olor de la piel fresca, recién salida de la ducha. La sensación de limpieza no va en detrimento de su sensualidad; por el contrario, la realza.

Creed Aventus Irresistiblemente viril: una atípica salida frutada, pinceladas de rosa y un fondo ahumado de maderas, patchouli, ambargris y vainilla.

Amouage Jubilation XXV Una orgía de maderas e incienso omaní. Profundo, misterioso y opulento.

Fueguia 1833 Fitz Roy Un sutil y fresco floral amaderado donde se destacan violetas y cedro. Excelente longevidad para una fragancia tan delicada.

Carner Barcelona Cuirs Cuero y humo de pipa se encuentran en esta creación nostálgica y varonil.

Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan El ámbar contra el que -creemos- deben contrastarse todos los ámbares. Primitivo, áspero, cálido y sensual.

Chanel Les Exclusifs Sycomore Un perfume amaderado seco de carácter ahumado y austero, ejecutado con maestría por Jacques Polge.

Rochas Rochas Man Café, lavanda, chocolate y vainilla confraternizan en este delicioso gourmand, creación del Chevalier Maurice Roucel.

Scent of a man – Our top 10 fragrances for gentlemen

We sustain our skepticism about bluntly labeling fragrances as feminine or masculine, but we can’t deny that certain notes (and accords) add feminine or masculine features, according to the conventions of the culture we live in.

We propose our top 10 of excellent fragrances, ranging from primitive masculinity to dandy. Each item in the list shines for its singularity and quality.

Eau d’Italie Sienne L’Hiver This is Duchaufour‘s masterpiece, according to his own words. Cold iris, violets, incense, hay and woods.

Hermes Eau d’Orange Verte Hesperidic and herbal notes mingle and give as a result an ephemeral and vitalizing water, as simple and classy as its name.

Thierry Mugler Cologne Evokes the scent of freshly showered skin. Its clean feel doesn’t substract sensuality, it enhances it.

Creed Aventus Irresistibly manly: an atypical fruity opening, rosy brushstrokes and a smoky drydown of woods, patchouli, ambergris and vanilla.

Amouage Jubilation XXV An orgy of woods and Omani frankincense. Deep, mysterious and opulent.

Fueguia 1833 Fitz Roy A subtle and fresh woody floral where violetas and cedarwood are the stars. The longevity is excelent for such a delicate fragrance.

Carner Barcelona Cuirs Leather and pipe smoke meet in this nostalgic and masculine creation.

Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan The amber against which -we believe- all other ambers should be measured. Primitive, coarse, warm and sensual.

Chanel Les Exclusifs Sycomore A dry woody perfume, smoky and austere in character, masterfully executed by Jacques Polge.

Rochas Rochas Man Coffee, lavender, chocolate and vanilla embrace each other in this delicious gourmand, created by Chevalier Maurice Roucel.

“Top 10″ – Deliciosa vainilla

Los Aztecas empleaban la vainilla (vanilla planifolia) para dar sabor al chocolate. Más tarde, los Españoles la llevaron a Europa. Allí fue utilizada como afrodisíaco, como antídoto y para tratar la histeria. Para el siglo XIX, ya era apreciada como ingrediente en alta perfumería.

Se dice que tiene propiedades calmantes, afrodisíacas y antidepresivas. En perfumes -aunque agradable- puede con facilidad tornarse monótona o demasiado dulce. Nos gusta tropical, combinada con ylang-ylang; misteriosa, mezclada con resinas para un efecto ahumado o gourmand, acompañada por almendras o limón.

Hoy compartimos algunos de nuestros perfumes preferidos con notas dominantes de vainilla:

–Rochas Tocade El genio de Maurice Roucel brilla en esta insolente fragancia de rosa y vainilla. El fondo es íntimo y atalcado.

–Caron Pour Un Homme Lavanda y vainilla se equilibran mutuamente en este clásico masculino y casi terapéutico. Amargo y dulce a un tiempo.

-Hermes Hermessence Vanille Galante Imaginen la más ligera espuma floral a la vainilla preparada en un restaurant de cocina molecular. Etérea, florece maravillosamente sobre la piel.

-Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Ylang & Vanille Dos poderosos afrodisíacos (vainilla e ylang-ylang) se fusionan en este dulce (y lamentablemente discontinuado) eau de toilette, evocador de los mares del Sur.

–Fragonard Fleur de Vanille Un gourmand delicado y exótico que sublima la vainilla con cacao, almendras, ylang-ylang y benjuí. Difícil de resistir, incluso por quienes no son amantes de la vainilla.

-Jean Paul Gaultier Gaultier2 Una creación unisex del nariz Francis Kurkdjian, sexy y muy reconfortante. Ámbar, vainilla y almizcle son los jugadores clave.

-Roger & Gallet Vanille Un eau douce limpio y refrescante donde la vainilla se ve agradablemente balanceada por bergamota, mandarina y pomelo.

-Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille La profundidad y riqueza que esperaríamos de Lutens están definitivamente presentes en esta vanilla para adultos. Ahumada, oscura y compleja.

–Anné Pliska Anné Pliska Luego de una salida chispeante, esta fragancia de culto muestra su corazón de naranja, vainilla, ambar y almizcle.

-L’Artisan Parfumeur Havana Vanille Ahumado y etéreo a la vez como sólo Duchaufour lo logra, este dulce eau de parfum aúna vainilla, ron, clavo de olor, tabaco y cuero.

-Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise Un suave y sofisticado eau de toilette donde una vainilla cremosa y no gourmand se engalana con detalles de almendra y maderas.

Prácticamente nos desmayamos de placer al leer la review de nuestra querida Olfactoria acerca de Mona di Orio Vanille (que aún no hemos podido probar).

Top 10 – Delicious vanilla

The Aztecs used vanilla (vanilla planifolia) to give flavor to chocolate. Later, the Spanish brought it to Europe. There it was used as an afrodisiac, as an antidote and to treat hysteria. By the 19th century, it was already appreciated as an ingredient for fine perfumery.

It is said to have calming, antidepressant and afrodisiac properties. In fragrances -although pleasant- it can easily become boring or too sweet. We like it tropical, paired with ylang-ylang; mysterious, mixed with resins for a smoky effect or gourmand, combined with almonds or lemon.

Today we share some of our vanilla-dominant favorite fragrances:

–Rochas Tocade Maurice Roucel’s genius shines in this fun and insolent rose-vanilla fragrance. The drydown is powdery and intimate.

–Caron Pour Un Homme Lavender and vanilla balance each other in this simple and almost therapeutic masculine classic. Bitter and sweet at a time.

-Hermes Hermessence Vanille Galante Imagine the lightest floral vanilla foam prepared in a molecular cuisine restaurant. Ethereal, this blooms wonderfully on skin.

-Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Ylang & Vanille Two powerful afrodisiacs (vanilla and ylang-ylang) merge in this sweet (and unfortunately discontinued) eau de toilette, evocative of the South Seas.

–Fragonard Fleur de Vanille A delicate and exotic gourmand that enhances vanilla with cacao, almond, ylang-ylang and benzoin notes. Even non-vanilla lovers have a hard time trying to resist it.

-Jean Paul Gaultier Gaultier2 A sexy and very comforting unisex creation by nose Francis Kurkdjian. Amber, vanilla and musk are the main players.

-Roger & Gallet Vanille A clean and refreshing eau douce in which the vanilla is nicely balanced by bergamot, mandarin and grapefruit.

-Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille The depth and richness we would expect from Lutens are definitely present in this vanilla for grown-ups. Smoky, dark and complex.

–Anné Pliska Anné Pliska After a bright opening, this cult fragrance shows its sensual heart of orange, vanilla, amber and musk.

-L’Artisan Parfumeur Havana Vanille Smoky and ethereal as only Duchaufour can master, this sweet eau de parfum blends vanilla, rum, cloves, tobacco and leather.

-Annick Goutal Vanille Exquise A soft, sophisticated eau de toilette with creamy (non gourmand) vanilla and hints of almond and wood.
