Seattle vio nacer al grunge pero también es cuna de talentosos perfumistas. Esta hermosa e interesante ciudad del estado de Washington, EEUU, está empapada de historia, música, arte, diseño, tecnología, gastronomía y -por supuesto- fragancias.

Un lluvioso y frío domingo 4 de mayo fue el marco perfecto para ensimismarse olfativamente en la 2da edición anual del Seattle Artisan Fragrance Salon, la cual se realizó en el Centro Internacional de Conferencias Bell Harbor. Si bien ya había asistido a este evento en otra ciudades -en calidad de prensa-, esta vez tuve el honor de ser invitada por sus organizadores (TasteTV) para conformar el jurado.

Me encontré con menos marcas que en otras oportunidades, lo que me dio la oportunidad de conversar un poco más con cada perfumista y conocerlos más en profundidad. La mayoría eran de la zona y algunos incluso eran muy nuevos en el mercado. Es interesante adentrarse en sus historias particulares, descubrir sus orígenes tan distintos, cómo arriban luego a la perfumería como una plataforma en común y la manera en la que finalmente se manifiestan con una idea, en un producto.

Tuve el placer de reencontrarme con la lugareña Ellen Covey (Olympic Orchids) quien me presentó sus nuevas creaciones (African Orchid y Sakura) y Blackbird,el cual no había podido conocer en el pasado Artisan Fragrance Salon de San Francisco. También volví a compartir un grato momento con la encantadora “reina de las lavandas”, Mesha Munyan (Meshaz Natural Perfumes), con sus perfumes y sus materias primas.

Conversé un buen rato con Sheri Howell (Nomad Two Worlds) quien me detalló sobre el nacimiento de la marca como un proyecto de arte colaborativo liderado por el fotógrafo australiano Russell James. Hoy tienen una colección de 5 perfumes llamada Raw Spirit, fundada en el valor de la sustentabilidad (ecológica y humana).

Jen T. Siems es de Seattle y la autora de la adorable marca Sweet Tea Apothecary. Amante de la historia y de la literatura, plasma esa fascinación en los demás con sus fragancias. Si bien todas las que probé fueron de mi agrado, Dharma Burn y Archibald fueron amor a primera olida.

Otro de los grandes hallazgos fue On The Nose, de San Francisco. Su perfumista Kenneth Cory irradia la energía que subyace en sus obras. Las presentó en frascos pequeños, casi con timidez, pero al olerlas (especialmente a Rusalka y a Dark & Stormy) supe que estaba ante una gran belleza. Más tarde me enteré que es discípulo de Mandy Aftel. No es casualidad.

Pirouette es también de Seattle, al igual que su multifacética creadora Karyn Gold-Reineke. Ella no sólo es la perfumista sino que también diseñó íntegramente la imagen de su marca y realiza a mano todos sus productos (incluso los de belleza). Souvenir -fragancia de la línea Perfume Gold– fue mi favorita.

Catamara Rosarium (Rosarium Blends) es una herbalista y alquimista local. Su background ofrece un abordaje visual más oscuro de la perfumería, como una correspondencia con el significado ritual de las esencias. Mientras me dejaba llevar por los efluvios de Agua de Palo Santo, ella y su socio Marcus McCoy me contaban sobre el importante rol de los aromas en el trabajo de los brujos, chamanes y magos.

Seattle Artisan Fragrance Salon – “Smells like fragrant spirit”

Seattle gave birth to grunge but is also home of talented perfumers . This beautiful and interesting city (in the state of Washington U.S.) is “soaked” in history, music, art , design, technology, food and of course , fragrances.

A rainy and cold Sunday, May 4 was the perfect time to lose ourselves into the 2nd Annual Seattle Artisan Fragrance Salon, which was held at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center. Although I had already attended – as press & media-  this event before in other cities, this time I had the honor to be invited by its organizers (TasteTv) and be one of the judges.

I encountered fewer brands than other times, which gave me the opportunity to talk a little longer with each perfumer and get to know them more in depth. Most of them are from the area and some were very new in the market. It is interesting to delve into their individual stories, discover their very different backgrounds, how they arrived in perfumery as a common platform and, finally, finally, how they translate an idea into a product.

I had the pleasure of meeting again with Seattle local Ellen Covey (Olympic Orchids) who introduced me to her new creations (African Orchid and Sakura) and Blackbird, which I had not sniffed at the past SF Artisan Fragrance Salon. I spent another pleasant moment with the charming “Queen of lavenders”, Mesha Munyan (Meshaz Natural Perfumes), sniffing her perfumes and raw materials.

I talked a while with Sheri Howell (Nomad Two Worlds) who explained me everything about the birth of the brand as a collaborative art project led by Australian photographer Russell James. Today they have a collection of five fragrances called Raw Spirit, founded on the value of sustainability (ecological and human).

Jen T. Siems is the Seattle based author of the lovable brand Sweet Tea Apothecary. History and literature buff, she imprints that fascination onto others with her fragrances. Even though everything I tried was to my liking, Dharma Burn and Archibald were love at first sniff.

Another great finding was On The Nose, from San Francisco: Perfumer Kenneth Cory radiates the energy that underlies his works. They were shown  almost coyly, in small bottles,but at the moment I smelled them I appreciated their great beauty (especially Rusalka and Dark & Stormy). I later learned that he is a disciple of Mandy Aftel. It is no coincidence.

Pirouette is also Seattle based, as well as its multifaceted creator Karyn Gold- Reineke. She is not only a perfumer but also the designer of the brand and the maker 9by hand) of all the products (including beauty). Souvenir, member of Perfume Gold fragrance line, was my favorite one.

Catamara Rosarium (Rosarium Blends) is a local herbalist and alchemist. Her background brings a darker visual approach to perfumery as a correspondence with the ritual meaning of essences. As I was carried away by the waves of Agua de Palo Santo, she and partner Marcus McCoy told me about the important role of aroma in the work of sorcerers, shamans and magicians.
