Los aromas de la Navidad según Caro:
En esta época del año, el tiempo en Buenos Aires es por lo general caluroso y húmedo; por lo tanto, la mayoría de los olores se ven aumentados: la brisa cálida lleva el aroma narcótico del tilo y el jazmín por todos los barrios. Las gardenias (jazmín del Cabo) dan el presente en cada puesto de flores y en la mayoría de las casas; incluso el ramo más pequeño puede llenar una habitación con su perfume.
En honor a la verdad, no soy una persona demasiado navideña, pero suelo usar esta época como tiempo de reflexión. Siempre armo un pequeño pesebre a fin de recordar de qué trata realmente la Navidad. Me gusta encender velas, lo que suma a la atmósfera reflexiva. Mi favorita de este año es Via della Basilica, de Rive Sud Interior. El olor de la mirra y el pino, resinoso y con toques de pimienta, se siente refrescante en días de calor. Me resulta austera, solemne pero a la vez reconfortante. Apenas la enciendo, me siento transportada a la majestuosa catedral de Orvieto, cuyo frío exterior de piedra blanca y negra contrasta con los matices dorados del paisaje de Umbria.
Los días menos calurosos suelo cocinar mucho: habitualmente springerle y stollen, así que el aroma de las cáscaras confitadas y especias también llena el aire. Este año opté por una receta que encontré en la web. Pueden leerla aquí. Sólo agregué más harina y elegí cáscaras de naranja confitada, pasas de uva y pasta de almendras como relleno. Conservo mis stollen (o el tipo de pan dulce que haya amasado ese año) en el freezer, listo para ser compartido con amigos que se acerquen a tomar el té.
Los aromas de la Navidad según Virginia:
Esta vez será mi segunda temporada navideña en Estados Unidos. El año pasado pude ver las similitudes que hay entre las películas de Hollywood y series de TV con lo que se vive en la vida real estadounidense. Primero y principal, hace frío porque el invierno está recién llegado. No nieva en donde vivo (Mountain View, California) pero las temperaturas son tan heladas como pueden llegar a serlas en Buenos Aires durante la misma estación.
Yo tampoco soy una persona navideña, pero me encanta observar (¡y oler!) lo que hace la gente por estos lados. Se ve a las personas con los sweaters tejidos de lana con figuras alegóricas, bufandas, guantes y narices rojas por el frío. La mayoría de los aromas y olores típicos de la Navidad son muy diferentes de los de Argentina. La calabaza, la canela y el clavo de la época del Día de Acción de Gracias cede su protagonismo al olor de pino, menta piperita y bizcocho de jengibre.
A fines de noviembre las familias van en auto a comprar su árbol de navidad: se trata de un verdadero pino recién cortado. Su verde y amaderado perfume envuelve los alrededores de los lugares donde los venden. Esto es una tradición desde el año 1901. Y antes de eso (en el último cuarto del S.XIX) comenzó la costumbre de regalarle a los niños los bastoncitos dulces de menta, de color rojo y blanco a rayas. Es algo que sigue vigente: ¡los veo por todos lados en estos días!
Por último, pero no menos importante: ¡el bizcocho de jengibre! Su consumo en épocas navideñas es una costumbre europea muy antigua y en los Estados Unidos es una parte indisolublemente asociada con las celebraciones. La confección y decoración de casas y galletas de bizcocho de jengibre con merengue, gomitas dulces y caramelos es uno de los momentos favoritos de los chicos.
No voy a hornear bizcochos ni decorar galletas pero adoro el jengibre. Recientemente descubrí una manera fácil de consentir mis antojos al respecto: degusté el Fresh Ginger Chef’s Essences Spray de Aftelier. Se trata de un aceite esencial de raíz de jengibre de Indonesia de chispeante e increíble sabor y aroma. Lo he probado con helado de crema, té, chocolate y arroz. ¡Es celestial (y aromáticamente navideño)!

Christmas scents
The scents of Christmas according to Caro:
The weather is usually hot and humid in Buenos Aires at this time of the year; thus, most smells are magnified: the warm breeze blows the narcotic aroma of linden blossom and jasmine all over the suburbs. Gardenias (jazmín del Cabo) are present in every flower stall and in most houses; even the smallest bunch can fill a room with its smell.
If I must be honest, I’m not much of a Christmas person, but I usually take this as time of reflection. I always have a small manger in order to remember what Christmas is really about. I like to burn candles, which adds to the reflective atmosphere. This year’s favorite is Via della Basilica, by Rive Sud Interior. The smell of myrrh and pine, peppery and resinous, feels refreshing in hot weather. I find it austere, solemn yet comforting at the same time. As soon as I light it, I feel transported to the majestic Orvieto Cathedral, whose cold black and white stone exterior contrasts with the golden hues of the Umbrian landscape.
On the less hot days, I bake a lot: usually it’s springerle and stollen, so the scent of candied peel and spices fills the air too. This year I opted for a recipe I found on the web. You can read it here. I just added some more flour and chose candied orange peel, raisins and almond paste as filling. I keep my stollen (or the type of pan dulce I choose that year) in the freezer, ready to be shared over tea whenever friends drop by.

It will be my second Christmas season in US. Last year I compared the similarities between Hollywood movies and TV series with the real American lifestyle. First and foremost, it is cold, because Winter has just arrived. There is no snow at my place (Mountain View, California) but the weather is as freezing as it is in Buenos Aires during the same season.
I’m not a Christmas person either but I love to observe (and smell!) what Americans do. So here you can see people wearing wool sweaters with themed figures, scarves, gloves and red noses. Most of the typical Christmas smells and aromas are very different from the Argentinian ones. The pumpkin, cinnamon and clove of Thanksgiving give their place to pine, peppermint and gingerbread.
At the end of November families go out on their cars in order to purchase their Christmas trees: a real fresh cut pine. Its green and woody fragrance is everywhere around the places where they’re sold. That tradition started in 1901. And before that (last quarter of 19th century) the practice of giving peppermint red and white stripped candy canes began. It still in force: they’re everywhere these days!
And last but no least: gingerbread! Its consumption on Christmas time is a very old European tradition and here in US is undoubtedly part of the celebrations. The construction of gingerbread houses and cookies decorated with icing and candies is one of the favorite moments for children.
I won’t bake and decorate a gingerbread house but I love the taste and smell of ginger. I recently discovered an easy way to indulge: the Fresh Ginger Chef’s Essences Spray by Aftelier. It’s an essential oil from Indonesian gingerroot with amazing sparkling flavor and aroma. I’ve tried on ice cream, tea, chocolate and rice. It’s heavenly (just in time for Christmas)!
