Rubj no fue amor a primer olfato. Cuando me acerqué a la línea Vero Profumo , fue Kiki quien me atrapó y quiso quedarse conmigo. De la misma forma en que a veces sucede con las relaciones, la atracción hacia Rubj (se pronuncia rubi) no fue inmediata sino que nuestro vínculo se volvió más fuerte y profundo con el tiempo. Ahora no creo poder vivir sin él. No querría hacerlo.

Vero Profumo es una línea pequeña, pero sólida.  Las creaciones de Vero Kern son abstractas, pero clásicas. La calidad es inusualmente alta; los frascos, exquisitos y los perfumes tienen tanto estilo como su creadora. Vero afirma que busca originalidad, opulencia y erotismo en sus fragancias; estos tres rasgos se muestran a todas luces en Rubj. Esta creación fue inspirada por “El jardín perfumado”, de Sheikh Nefzaoui –un compendio amatorio árabe escrito en el siglo XV– y está orquestado alrededor de la flor de naranjo.

Nunca entendí muy bien cómo una flor tradicionalmente ligada a la pureza y llevada por las novias podía oler tan impúdica. En su libro Aromatherapy, Danièle Ryman escribe que, antaño, las prostitutas madrileñas se perfumaban con neroli (flor de naranjo destilada por vapor) de manera tal que sus clientes las reconocían por el aroma. El experto Robert Tisserand menciona la capacidad del aceite esencial de neroli para tratar el insomnio, la histeria, ansiedad y depresión. El absoluto de flor de naranjo, que se obtiene por medio de extracción con solventes, huele más dulce y pleno, no tan fresco como el neroli, aunque ambos son extraídos de la misma flor.

No hay nada de virginal en Rubj: es un perfume que arde y resplandece. La flor de naranjo de Marruecos casa aquí con Jazmín de Egipto. La mezcla resultante es embriagadora, casi narcótica. Rubj no es una ingenua que pestañea con coquetería, sino una consumada femme fatale.

Eau de Parfum y parfum son, en la línea Vero Profumo, completamente distintos. Las primeras tres fragancias de Vero (Rubj, Kiki y Onda) huelen más aireadas y alegres que los parfums y están matizadas por una nota de maracujá muy realista.  ¡Atención comino-fóbicos! La versión eau de parfum de Rubj puede ser polarizante. Algunos pueden encontrarla descortés debido a la combinación de comino y almizcle que puede remitir a olores corporales; yo la considero deliciosamente pícara. De hecho, creo que es eso precisamente lo que hace que Rubj se eleve por encima de la mera belleza y se vuelva sublime. El parfum es, como podría esperarse, más rico y denso,  tan potente que una o dos gotas bastan. Lo encuentro de una belleza más convencional (aunque no menos impactante) y, por ende, mas accesible olfativamente que el eau de parfum. La longevidad y proyección son sobresalientes en ambas fórmulas.

Vero Kern se encuentra actualmente trabajando en un perfume de rosa que, siguiendo la huella de sus creaciones previas, no será un solifloral.

Vero Profumo Rubj – “Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it”

Rubj was not love at first sniff. When I approached the Vero Profumo line, it was Kiki the one that grabbed me and chose to stay with me. Much like it sometimes happens with relationships, the attraction to Rubj  (pronounced ruby) wasn’t immediate but our bond grew deeper and stronger over time. Now I don’t think I could ever live without it. I wouldn’t want to.

Vero Profumo is a small but solid line. Vero Kern‘s creations are abstract but still classic. The quality is unusually high; the flacons, exquisite and the juices, as stylish as their creator. Vero states she goes for originality, opulence and eroticism in her fragrances; these three traits shine clearly in Rubj. The fragrance was inspired by Sheikh Nefzaoui‘s “Perfumed Garden” –an Arabic amatory compendium written in the fifteenth century- and is (almost) all about orange blossom.

I never understood quite well how a flower traditionally related to purity and worn by brides could smell so unchaste. In her book Aromatherapy,  Danièle Ryman writes that, in olden times, the prostitutes from Madrid would scent themselves with neroli (steam distilled orange flower) so that their clients would recognize them by the smell. Expert Robert Tisserand mentions the ability of neroli essential oil to treat insomnia, hysteria, anxiety and depression. Orange blossom absolute, which is obtained via solvent extraction, smells fuller and sweeter, less fresh than neroli, although both are extracted from the same flower.

There’s nothing virginal about Rubj: it is a fragrance that smolders and glows. Moroccan orange blossom appears here married to Egyptian jasmine. The blend is heady, almost narcotic. Rubj is not an eyelash-batting ingénue but an accomplished femme fatale.

Eau de Parfum and parfum are, in the Vero Profumo line, two different animals. Vero‘s first three fragrances (Rubj, Kiki and Onda) smell airier, more cheerful than the parfums and are tinged by a very realistic passion fruit note. Cuminphobes beware! The eau de parfum version of Rubj can be polarizing. Some may find it impolite due to the combination of musk and cumin which can evoke body odors; I regard it as deliciously naughty. In fact, I think that’s precisely what makes Rubj rise above mere beauty and become sublime. The parfum is, as one would expect, richer, denser,  and so powerful that just one or two drops suffice. I find it more conventionally beautiful (but no less stunning) and, thus, more easily approachable than the eau de parfum. Longevity and projection are outstanding in both formulas.

Vero Kern is currently working on a rose fragrance which, following in the steps of her former creations, will not be a soliflore.
