Chipre significa…bueno… Chipre (como la isla) y aunque la fragancia homónima –creada por Francois Coty en 1917– a menudo recibe crédito por haber sido la primera del género, hemos visto referencias a perfumes del mismo nombre en textos que datan de –por lo menos- los 1860s: “El rey llevaba puesto su uniforme y estaba perfumado pesadamente con chipre” (la emperatriz Elisabeth de Austria refiriéndose a su primo, Luis II, en una carta escrita en 1865)

Esta familia dominante y misteriosa debe lo mejor de su belleza al musgo de roble, una materia prima que, lamentablemente, se encuentra hoy restringida por la IFRA. En esta familia, el musgo de roble generalmente se ve aliado con bergamota, florales, patchouli y/o cistus.

Los años 1940 –1960 vieron el cenit de los chipres. Muchos de nosotros nos sentimos transportados a esa época al olerlos. Los chipres d ela nueva generación, formulados con dosis homeopáticas o nada de musgo de roble, palidecen al ser comparados con sus gloriosos ancestros.

Los chipres no son aniñados, no son juguetones y definitivamente no son para cabezas huecas. Son de carácter maduro y traslucen una sensualidad estructurada, casi intelectual.

Compartimos aquí nuestros 10 chipres clásicos favoritos:

Guerlain Mitsouko Creado en 1919, este maravilloso chipre aduraznado era una de las fragancias favoritas de Charles Chaplin. Su base amaderada y su brillo dorado nos recuerdan un otoño en el bosque. Funciona igualmente bien en damas y caballeros.

Rochas Femme Un chipre rotundo y voluptuoso creado por Edmond Roudnitska en 1944. Es frutado de un modo adulto (ciruela y durazno) con notas animales (almizcle, civet y cuero) que sugieren el olor de un cuerpo femenino. Este perfume tiene curvas.

Gres Cabochard Verde, ahumado, floral y rudo. Evoca flores blancas, chaquetas de motociclista y ceniceros, en un buen sentido! No somos fanáticos de vestir cuero, pero con perfumes como este nos vemos dispuestos a hacer la excepción.

Hermes Caleche Este chipre serio, polvoroso y amaderado, del mismo modo que una bibliotecaria sexy (estamos hablando del líquido vintage, no de la insustancial versión de hoy día), transpira un severo erotismo. Si alguna vez se encuentran con el talco original, aduéñense de él: es celestial.

Chanel No. 19 Bella, fría y sin corazón con sus notas de iris y gálbano, esta reina de hielo no tiene una pizca de calidez. Una opción fabulosa para reuniones de negocios o para romperle el corazón a alguien.

Dior Diorella Frutal como un durazno que gotea néctar o como un melón entibiado por el sol, maduro casi al borde de la descomposición. Fresco y carnoso a la vez, este perfume es otra obra maestra de Roudnitska.

Estee Lauder Knowing Una rosa oscura que crece sobre terreno cubierto de musgo. Luego de una salida espinosa, se torna cremosa y suave. Una amiga cercana, bailarina de tango, da fe de sus poderes de seducción. Esta belleza es potente: aplicar con mano ligera.

Balmain Jolie Madame Delicado y duro a un tiempo, este elegante chipre –creado por Germaine Cellier en los 1950s- combina una salida verde y jugosa con un corazón de suave cuero y violetas y un fondo limpio y jabonoso. Nos pone de ánimo para usar guantes y tacos chupete.

Clinique Aromatics Elixir Herbáceo, floral y bastante masculino en carácter, este complejo líquido se ha convertido en un perfume de culto. Una fuerte dosis de patchouli y un desarrollo inusual lo tornan igualmente  polarizante y atractivo.

Editions de Parfums Le Parfum de Therese Esta maravilla líquida fue compuesta por Edmond Roudnitska en los 1950s, dedicado a su esposa –Therese- y usado solamente por ella. Resultaba muy vanguardista para su momento, con sus notas de melón y mandarina. Es, de todos modos, mucho más que una fragancia frutada: su elegante corazón floral está sazonado por nuez moscada y su fondo huele a maderas y cuero. Una de las estrellas de la línea Editions de Parfums.

Top 10 – Legendary chypres

Chypre means…well…Cyprus (as in the island) and even though the homonymous fragrance -created by Francois Coty in 1917– is often credited with having been the first of the genre, we have seen references to scents of the same name in texts from –at least- the1860s: “The King was wearing his uniform and was heavily perfumed with chypre” (Empress Elizabeth of Austria referring to her cousin, Louis II, on a letter written in 1865)

This assertive and mysterious family owes the best of its beauty to oakmoss, a raw material now sadly restricted by IFRA. Oakmoss is generally paired with bergamot, florals, patchouli and/or labdanum.

The 1940s –1960s saw the zenith of chypres. Many of us, upon smelling them, feel transported  to those times. The new generation of chypres, formulated with homeopathic doses of or no oakmoss at all, pale when compared to their glorious forebears.

Chypres are not girly, not playful and definitely not for airheads. They are mature in character and their sensuality is structured, almost intellectual.

We share today our 10 favorites:

Guerlain Mitsouko Created in 1919, this wonderful peachy chypre was one of the favorite fragrances of Charles Chaplin. Its woody base notes and golden glow makes us think of Autumn in the forest. It wears equally well on gentlemen and ladies.

Rochas Femme A round and voluptuous chypre created by Edmond Roudnitska in 1944. It is fruity in an adult way (plum and peach) with  animalic notes (musk, civet and leather) that suggest the odor of a female body. This fragrance has curves.

Gres Cabochard Green, smoky, floral and tough. It evokes white flowers, biker jackets and ashtrays, in a good way! We are not too fond of wearing leather, but with fragrances like this we are willing to make the exception.

Hermes Caleche This serious woody and powdery chypre, much like a sexy librarian (we are talking the vintage juice here, not the unsubstantial current version), reeks of a severe eroticism. If you ever manage to stumble across the vintage body powder, snatch it: it’s heavenly.

Chanel No. 19 Beautiful, cold and heartless with its iris and galbanum notes. This ice queen doesn’t have a smidge of warmth to it. A great option for business meetings or for breaking someone’s heart.

Dior Diorella Fruity as a peach dripping with nectar or a melon warmed by the sun, so overripe that it is almost on the verge of decomposition. Fresh and fleshy at the same time, this is another Roudnitska masterpiece.

Estee Lauder Knowing A dark rose growing on mossy ground. After its thorny opening, it then becomes soft and creamy. A close friend of ours, a tango dancer herself, swears by its seductive powers.  This beauty is powerful: apply with a light hand.

 Balmain Jolie Madame Delicate and tough at the same time, this ladylike chypre –created by Germaine Cellier in the 1950s- combines a juicy green opening with a heart of soft leather and violets and a clean, soapy drydown. It puts us in the mood for gloves and kitten-heel shoes.

Clinique Aromatics Elixir Herbaceous, floral and quite masculine in character, this complex fragrance has a serious cult following. A strong dose of patchouli and an unusual development make it equally challenging and compelling.

Editions de Parfums Le Parfum de Therese This liquid wonder was composed by Edmond Roudnitska in the 1950s, dedicated to his wife –Therese- and worn solely by her. It was very avant-garde for its time, with its mandarin and melon notes. It is, however, a lot more than a fruity fragrance: its elegant floral heart is seasoned with nutmeg and the drydown is woody and leathery drydown. One of the stars in the Editions de Parfums collection.
