La conexión entre el lirio del valle -o muguet- y el amor, la primavera y la juventud viene de larga data. Esta delicada flor se abre en mayo como anunciando el verano, justo a mitad de la primavera septentrional.
Alrededor de este hecho de la naturaleza, en ciertos lugares de Europa -si bien el muguet es originario del Japón- era tradición La Fête du Muguet cada 1ero de mayo. Allí se bailaba y los jóvenes buscaban pareja. Las muchachas y las niñas vistiendo de blanco y los muchachos con un boutonnière con ramitas de lirio del valle.
La perfumista Patricia de Nicolaï ha reformulado recientemente Un Coeur en Mai para la lujosa marca Parfums MDCI. Aunque no tuve oportunidad de conocer la versión anterior, doy fe de que la actual (con una mayor concentración) hace honor a su nombre (que en francés significa Un corazón en mayo). Es un floral verde y fresco como el muguet de mayo, pero no volátil, sino con consistencia tierna y tibia que remite al amor.
La apertura es transparente: petitgrain, mimosa, lirio del valle y jacinto. Poco a poco se van entretejiendo con notas acuosas frutales de melón y grosella negra. Un toque verde silvestre de gálbano con geranio –perfumado apenas con pimienta negra- es la antesala para disfrutar de un sillage dominado por rosa búlgara y almizcle.
No puedo dejar de compararlo con Muguet Du Bonheur de Caron, pues comparten muchas similitudes. Pero se diferencian en que Un Coeur en Mai es más luminoso y limpio y no tan indólico, carnal y amielado.

Around this fact of nature, in some regions of Europe -although muguet is originally from Japan– La Fête du Muguet was traditionally held every May 1st. There was dancing and young people would look for a couple. The young girls and child girls were dressed in white and boys used to wear a boutonnière with sprigs of lily of the valley.
Perfumer Patricia de Nicolaï has recently reformulated Un Coeur en Mai for the luxurious brand Parfums MDCI. Although I had no chance of knowing the previous version, I can attest that the current formulation (with a higher concentration) lives up to its name (it means Heart in May in french). It is fresh, green and floral much like the muguet in May, but it is not volatile. Instead it has a tender and warm hue which refers to love.
The opening is clear: petitgrain, mimosa, lily of the valley and hyacinth. Little by little they are woven together with watery fruity notes of melon and blackcurrant. A wild green touch of galbanum with geranium -blend scented with barely there black pepper– is the prelude and enjoyable sillage dominated by Bulgarian rose and musk.
I can’t help but compare it with Muguet Du Bonheur by Caron, because they share many similarities. But the main difference is that Un Coeur en Mai is cleaner and brighter, and not as indolic, fleshy and honeyed.
