Heeley Hippie Rose – Espíritu libre

Las creaciones de Heeley transpiran elegancia, simpleza y refinamiento; cualidades que se  adivinan desde el packaging. Cuir Pleine Fleur es una maravilla que me fascina día a día y Menthe Fraiche, uno de mis favoritos en tiempo de calor. Hippie Rose, mi propuesta de hoy, rebosa de rosa y patchouli.

El patchouli y la rosa son una pareja exitosa. Las notas se equilibran y realzan mutuamente: el patchouli suma una faceta sucia a la rosa, brindando su cualidad terrosa y restando un poco de decoro; la rosa, a su vez, añade dulzor y redondez al  patchouli.

El tema ha sido explorado en mezclas ya consagradas, como L’Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses, Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance, Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose e incluso Dior Midnight Poison. En los tiempos que corren esta combinación es relativamente frecuente y el equilibrio entre opuestos que presenta, parece ampliamente apreciado y disfrutado.

La salida en Hippie Rose es cítrica, iluminada por el resplandor chispeante de la bergamota. Lo que sigue es una bonita rosa, entibiada por los rayos del sol, que se torna terrosa con el patchouli y más espiritual por medio del incienso.  El resultado es un aroma ligero, transparente y aún así algo salvaje que me hizo pensar en una versión más fresca y menos sombría de Paestum Rose. El almizcle de la base es sorprendentemente carnal -como evocador del amor libre- y persiste durante horas .

Hippie Rose -esta criatura hippie–  aunque lejos de revolucionaria es una belleza amigable y provista de sustancia. Al olerla, insta a tararear, casi sin querer, San Francisco, de Scott McKenzie. Puede no cambiar al mundo, pero sin duda hace mis días más dichosos.

Heeley Hippie Rose – Free spirit

Heeley‘s creations exude simplicity, elegance and refinement; qualities that are reflected in their bottles and packaging. The wonderful Cuir Pleine Fleur keeps me in awe day after day and Menthe Fraiche is a favorite in hot weather. Hippie Rose, my choice du jour, brims with rose and patchouli.

Patchouli and rose are a successful couple. The notes balance and enhance each other: patchouli adds a dirty facet to the rose, giving earthiness and substracting primness; the rose, in turn,  adds sweetness and roundness to the patchouli.

The theme has already been explored in such striking blends as L’Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses, Juliette Has a Gun Lady Vengeance, Eau d’Italie Paestum Rose and  even  Dior Midnight Poison.  Nowadays this combination is fairly common  and its slight darkness seems widely appreciated and enjoyed.

The opening in Hippie Rose is citrusy, illuminated by the sparkly brightness of bergamot. What follows is a very pretty rose, warmed by the rays of the sun, rendered earthier by patchouli and more spiritual by means of incense.  The result is a light, transparent and yet something wild scent; like a fresher, less gloomy version of Paestum Rose. The musk in the base is surprisingly carnal -as if evoking free love- and persists for hours.

Hippie Rose –the flower child-  though far from revolutionary is a friendly beauty not devoid of substance. Upon smelling it, it is almost impossible not to hum Scott McKenzie’s San Francisco. It might not change the world but, without a doubt, it fills my days with bliss.

Ultravioleta – Nuestro “top 10” de violetas

Los antiguos Griegos consideraban a la violeta símbolo de amor y fertilidad. Más tarde, la flor fue asociada con la timidez, la fidelidad y la modestia.

Los perfumes de violeta -amados y llevados por caballeros y damas durante el período victoriano- mantuvieron su popularidad hasta bien avanzado el siglo XX.

Hoy, nuestras 10 violetas favoritas:
  • Maison Berdoues Violettes de Toulouse Este solifloral es simple, ligeramente azucarado y delicioso, como los dulces franceses del mismo nombre.
  • Borsari Violetta di Parma Dulzón y ligeramente seco, es el aroma más fiel a la flor que hemos olido de una botella.
  • Pierre Balmain Jolie Madame (vintage) Un chipre elegante con violetas y cuero suave.
  • Creed Love in Black Fuerte, amaderado y dulce, esta violeta no es en absoluto tímida. Un poco lineal, pero con longevidad fabulosa.
  • Caron Violette Precieuse (vintage) Hermosamente anticuado. Cremosas violetas contenidas por una salida verde y un fondo oscuro.
  • Balenciaga Le Dix (vintage) Aldehídos, maderas, violetas y polvo se mezclan en esta belleza elegante y formal.
  • Guerlain Insolence Una salida poderosa de frutos rojos y violetas se torna más suave e íntima gracias al sándalo y al almizcle. Preferimos la EdP.
  • Geo F. Trumper Ajaccio Violets Una composición fresca y elegante para caballeros, con hoja y flor de violeta. Un perfume para dandies.
  • Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel Violetas, cítricos, musgo de roble y maderas. fresco, limpio y elegante. Aunque se vende como masculino, las damas pueden perfectamente tomarlo en préstamo.
  • Les Nez The Unicorn Spell Tan etéreo y fugaz como la visión de un unicornio. Frío, terroso y sobrenatural.

Ultraviolet – Our violet “Top 10″

The ancient Greeks regarded violets as a symbol of love and fertility. Later, the flower became associated with shyness, fidelity and modesty.
Violet fragrances -worn and loved by gentlemen and ladies during Victorian times- retained their popularity well into the 1900s.
Today, our 10 favorite violets:
  • Maison Berdoues Violettes de Toulouse This soliflore is simple, slightly sugary and delicious, like the French sweets of the same name.
  • Borsari Violetta di Parma Sweetish and slightly dry, it is the closest to the real flower we have smelled from a bottle.
  • Pierre Balmain Jolie Madame (vintage) A ladylike chypre with violets and soft leather.
  • Creed Love in Black Strong, woody and sweet, this violet is not shy at all. A bit linear but with fabulous lasting power.
  • Caron Violette Precieuse (vintage) Beautifully old-fashioned. creamy violets contained by a green opening and a dark drydown.
  • Balenciaga Le Dix (vintage) Aldehydes, woods, violets and powder mingle in this elegant and formal beauty.
  • Guerlain Insolence A powerful opening of berries and violet is rendered softer and more intimate via sandalwood and musk. We like the EdP best.
  • Geo F. Trumper Ajaccio Violets A fresh and elegant composition for gentlemen, with violet leaf and flower. A fragrance for dandies.
  • Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel Violet, citrus, oakmoss and woods. Crisp, clean and elegant. While marketed as a masculine scent, it can perfectly be borrowed by the ladies.
  • Les Nez The Unicorn Spell As ethereal and fleeting as the sighting of an unicorn. Cool, earthy and otherworldly.

Fueguia 1833 Huemul – Salvaje fragilidad

El almizcle en perfumería es -literal y simbólicamente- embajador olfativo del ciervo y de todo lo que éste nos provoca. Por un lado, experimentamos ternura y sentimientos paternales y, por el otro, las ansias de vivir por un momento una vida salvaje. Y con “salvaje” no me refiero a “feroz”, sino a vivir libremente, sin ataduras y en comunión con la naturaleza.

Huemul toma su nombre del ciervo autóctono de la Patagonia. Es una composición que transmite delicadeza y vigor al mismo tiempo. Por obra y gracia del muscone, me encontré de pronto como si estuviera oliendo la tibieza dulzona del pelaje.

Aunque no se enlista entre sus ingredientes, hay una suave impronta amaderada como de sándalo, que nos dibuja al huemul rodeado de árboles en el medio del bosque. Un fino velo de jazmín aporta cuerpo y exalta la cremosidad de la armonía.

Esta fragancia tiene una textura entre oleosa y jabonosa. Si bien sus notas son animálicas, no llega a tornarse sucio o grasoso. Es muy persistente en durabilidad y en estructura olfativa. El único cambio que percibo, es que alrededor de la hora de haberlo aplicado en la piel se torna algo metálico. Tal vez se deba al habanolide, uno de los integrantes de la familia sintética de los llamados Macrocyclic Musks.

Sin dudas, Huemul es mi principal favorito de la casa Fueguia 1833.

Fueguia 1833 Huemul – Wild fragility

Musk in perfumery is -literally and symbolically- an olfactive ambassador of deer and everything that it evokes to us. On one hand, we experience tenderness and paternal feelings and, on the other, the desire to live a wild life just for a moment. But by “wild” I don’t mean “fierce”, but to live freely and in communion with Nature.

Huemul takes its name from the native Patagonian deer. It’s a composition that transmits gentleness as well as force. By the grace of muscone, I suddenly found myself as if smelling the sweet warmth of the deer skin.

Although it’s not listed as an ingredient, there is a soft woody tone like sandalwood, which paints the huemul surrounded by trees in the middle of the forest. A thin veil of jasmine gives a creamy consistence to the whole harmony.

This fragrance has a texture between oily and soapy. Even though its notes are animalic, it doesn’t become dirty or greasy. It has excellent longevity and a persistent olfactory structure. The only change that I perceive is this: about one hour after the application the composition becomes a little metallic. Perhaps that is due to an habanolide note, one of the synthetic members of the family of so-called macrocyclic musks.

Without a doubt, Huemul is one of my favorite fragrances of Fueguia 1833 house.

Calé Fulgor – La calma antes de la tormenta

Al probar mis muestras de Calé, me encontré gratamente sorprendida por la ternura de Dolce Riso y la indiscutible belleza de Brezza di Seta, pero el inusual Fulgor, con su ensamble de narciso y notas minerales, fue el que más me impactó. Estoy acostumbrada al narciso como integrante de bouquets clásicos – como Chamade o Grand Amour- pero esta combinación me resultaba desconcertante. De una buena manera.

Casi me olvidé de Fulgor y mis muestras hasta que, unos días más tarde,una querida amiga trajo a colación anécdotas de un viaje que había hecho al  Valle de la Muerte muchos años atrás. Describió cómo se había sentido hipnotizada por la extraña flora del lugar y por el hecho de que, a lo largo de la eterna carretera, exactamente la mitad del cielo se veía azul profundo mientras que la otra mitad era densa y negra, a punto de estallar en una tormenta eléctrica.

En medio de nuestra conversación, recordé a Fulgor y mi charla con Silvio Levi , en la que él había mencionado que se había inspirado en un viaje a Nevada para crear esta fragancia. No bien volví a casa busqué mi muestra, la abrí e inhalé. Todo estaba dentro del diminuto frasco…el verde intenso de la vegetación, la tierra sequísima, el olor del aire que anticipa la lluvia, la carga eléctrica de la atmósfera simbolizada por la tensión entre notas florales y minerales…pude percibir vívidamente ese lugar en el que nunca había estado.  Un fondo cálido y ambarado suaviza la composición y la vuelve tan reconfortante como las gotas de lluvia que caen sobre la tierra sedienta.

La longevidad es excelente, pero lo que más celebro de este eau de parfum es su originalidad y la capacidad de transmitir emoción.

Calé Fulgor – The calm before the storm

Upon testing my Calé samples, I found myself pleasantly surprised by the tenderness of Dolce Riso and the undeniable beauty of Brezza di Seta, but the unusual Fulgor, with its pairing of narcissus and mineral notes, impacted me the most. I am used to narcissus as part of  classical bouquets – as in Chamade or Grand Amour- but this combination was puzzling. In a good way.

I almost forgot about Fulgor and my samples until, a few days later, a dear friend brought up the subject of a trip she had  taken to the Death Valley many years ago. She described how she had been mesmerized by the strange flora and by the fact that, along the seemingly endless road, exactly half of the sky looked deep blue, and the other half was dense and black, about to burst into an electrical storm.

Amidst our conversation,  I remembered Fulgor and my talk with  Silvio Levi, in which he  had mentioned this fragrance had been inspired by a trip to Nevada. As soon as I got back home I took my sample, opened it and inhaled. It was all within my tiny vial…the intense green  of the vegetation, the dry earth, the smell of the air that anticipates rain, the electric charge in the atmosphere symbolised by the tension between floral and mineral notes…I was able to vividly perceive that place where I had never been. A warm, ambery drydown smooths the composition and turns it as comforting as the drops of rain that fall on the thirsty earth.

Its longevity is excellent, but what I celebrate most about this eau de parfum is its originality and ability to convey emotion.

Lostmarc’h Lann-Aël – Regreso a la infancia

Lostmarc’h es el nombre de un diminuto pueblo de Bretaña. La belleza salvaje de sus playas lo convierte en el lugar ideal para unas vacaciones tranquilas junto al mar.  Lostmarc’h da su nombre a una casa de perfumes radicada en Bretaña que crea eaux de toilette exquisitas y delicadamente simples. 

Lann-Aël, el perfume que estoy probando hoy, ya ha sido listado en nuestro  top ten de fragancias gourmand. Lo olí por primera vez, apresuradamente, en mi visita a Olfattorio Roma  el año pasado, pero tuve la suerte de obtener una generosa muestra en Olfattorio Excelsior Milan durante otro viaje.

Lann-Aël, que significa páramo de los ángeles en dialecto Bretón, es tan tranquilizador y reconfortante como un perfume puede llegar a ser. Olores que parecen viajar desde nuestra niñez nos inundan el alma y nos trasladan a un lugar seguro y feliz. 

Dulces notas de manzana se mezclan con el calmante aroma de la vainilla, el que a menudo está asociado con nuestras memorias olfativas más tempranas. Se suman también cereales, notas lacteadas y un toque de genialidad,  provisto por las tonalidades de nuez del trigo sarraceno tostado. El trigo sarraceno -que no es una variedad de trigo ni un cereal, sino una semilla- es un ingrediente popular en la cocina bretona y su harina sabe especialmente deliciosa cuando se usa en galettes. Esta nota de trigo sarraceno tostado parece aparecer y desaparecer durante la evolución de la fragancia, agregando un elemento inesperado y original a una composición que de otro modo podría haber resultado algo aburrida.

El eau de toilette resultante es cálidamente dulce y sutilmente atalcado, de un carácter casi maternal.  Aparenta serenidad, pero es suficientemente poderoso como para dispersar temores y ansiedad.

Lostmarc’h Lann-Aël – Back to infancy

Lostmarc’h is the name of a tiny village in Brittany. The wild beauty of its beaches makes it an ideal place for a quiet seaside holiday.  Lostmarc’h lends its name to a Brittany-based fragrance house that creates exquisite and delicately simple eaux de toilette. 

Lann-Aël, the fragrance I am sampling today, has already been listed on our top ten gourmand perfumes. I sniffed it for the first time, hurriedly, on my visit to Olfattorio Roma  last year but was lucky enough to obtain a generously sized sample at Olfattorio Excelsior Milan during another trip.

Lann-Aël, whichmeans Angels heath in Breton dialect, is as comforting and calming as a fragrance can possibly be. Smells that seem to travel back from our childhood fill our soul and take us to a safe and happy place.

Sweet apple notes blend with the soothing scent of vanilla, which is often associated to our earliest olfactory memories. Also part of the equation are cereals, milky notes and a touch of genius, provided by the nutty tones of toasted buckwheat. Buckwheat -which is not a variety of wheat nor a cereal, but a seed- is a popular ingredient in Breton cuisine and its flour tastes especially delicious when used in galettes. This toasted buckweat note seems to appear and disappear during the evolution of the fragrance adding an unexpected and original element to a composition that might have otherwise been a bit boring.

The resulting eau de toilette  is warmly sweet and subtly powdery, of an almost maternal character.  It appears to be serene but is powerful enough to dispel fears and anxiety.
