Dentro de Excelsior, una escalera breve conduce a un pequeño Bar à Parfums   de Olfattorio. Mi visita a Olfattorio Roma, tiempo atrás, había resultado una experiencia agradable, reforzada por una excelente atención, así que subí los escalones alegremente y alenté a la amiga que me acompañaba a hacer lo mismo. Mi amiga estaba en busca de un perfume limpio y fresco. Prácticamente no pudo contenerse cuando la dulce Edmonda la instó a probar Limon de Cordoza, de The Different Company y L’Eau de L’Hermine, de Lostmarc’h.  La etiqueta de este último, con la ilustración de un armiño, nos pareció especialmente bonita.  Finalmente mi amiga cambió de idea y optó por algo completamente diferente: Vamp  a NY, una tuberosa jugosa y tropical, de la línea orgánica Honoré des Prés.  Olfattorio vende también Les Parfums de Rosine, Coudray y L.T. Piver y tiene otros puntos de venta en Milán.

Luego de visitar la maravillosa Pinacoteca di Brera, me detuve en Profumo, sobre Via Brera, donde logré intercambiar unas palabras con Guido, el propietario. Profumo fue pionero en los 1980s vendiendo lo que ahora conocemos como nicho. Guido dice que su trabajo es ayudar a los clientes a encontrar una fragancia que satisfaga sus necesidades.  La boutique intenta ser un lugar dedicado a la cultura del perfume y no solamente a la venta.  Profumo ciertamente logra una atmósfera acogedora:  en la tienda pueden encontrarse dos cómodos asientos y una pequeña biblioteca con libros referentes al tema. Estos libros no están a la venta, sino para que los clientes puedan consultarlos. La selección de marcas es impresionante en número y calidad: Maison Francis Kurkdjian,  Olivier Durbano, Montale, Cire Trudon, Tauer Perfumes, By Kilian, Mancera, Etat Libre d’Orange, Editions de Parfums, Keiko Mecheri, Parfumerie Generale, Pure Distance, Mona di Orio, Bruno Acampora. El lugar me pareció simplemente brillante.

Más tarde hice escala en la tradicional  profumeria Mazzolari, ya que sentía curiosidad acerca de la línea epónima de fragancias.  En el pequeño negocio de Corso Matteotti encontré a los alegres y simpáticos Luisa y Luigi. Este último un maquillador de Dior, pero estaba más que predispuesto a ayudar.  Luego de probar los perfumes Mazzolari entendí por qué Alessandro  es el  best seller de la casa.  Almendrado sin clichés de mazapán, huele cálido y reconfortante, pero conserva una cierta sequedad y nunca se vuelve demasiado dulce. Hoy, de vuelta en casa, me arrepiento de no haber comprado una botella.  Mi segundo preferido resultó Musk y también disfruté del redondeado Patchouli.  Luigi se disculpó por no tener muestras de las fragancias  Mazzolari y me dio algunas de  Dior, un gesto que no era necesario, pero que aprecié de todas maneras. Ellos me sugirieron que visitara su otra tienda, que es más grande y está ubicada en Corso Monforte. 

Hice mi visita al día siguiente y me encontré en el edén de la belleza. La tienda ofrece una vasta selección de accesorios, desde pinzas de depilar Rubis a una miríada de pestañas postizas. Tuve que hacer un esfuerzo consciente para no mirar esa área y lograr enfocarme en los perfumes. Mientras visitaba la sección de fragancias, me asistió una amable vendedora (cuyo nombre lamentablemente omití preguntar). Se veía muy interesada en ayudarme y en el hecho de que viniera desde un lugar tan lejano. Penhaligon’s, Crabtree & Evelyn, Clive Christian y Annick Goutal se mezclan con Thierry Mugler y otras marcas mainstream.

En mi último día en Milán, visité 10 Corso Como, tienda cuidadosamente curada, propiedad de Carla Sozzani, hermana de Franca.  Además de deleitarse con la increíble -y no estoy exagerando- selección de prendas y accesorios, una puede oler Serge Lutens, By Kilian, Histoires de Parfums (si todavía no probaron Ambre 114, bueno, se impone hacerlo), Comme des Garcons, Les Parfums de Rosine, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Maison Francis Kurkdjian (el animálico Absolue pour le Soir permaneció en mi muñeca por el resto del día) y la fragancia emblemática de la boutique, 10 Corso Como,  que tiene notas dominantes de sándalo e incienso. El staff podría ser un poco más amigable, pero supongo que no se espera que las personas sean amigables en esta clase de lugares. La boutique es una meca para los amantes de la moda y estoy segura de que recibir a tantos peregrinos debe resultar agotador.  10 Corso Como también alberga una galería de arte, donde me di el gusto de ver una exhibición fotográfica de Peter Lindbergh.  Habría pasado la mitad del día en la librería donde, como es de esperarse, los textos sobre moda son las indiscutidas estrellas, pero -¡ay!- ya era hora de apresurarme para no perder mi vuelo.

Sniffing Milan – Part 2

Inside Excelsior there is a short stairway that leads to a small Bar à Parfums  by Olfattorio. My visit to Olfattorio Roma, time ago, had proved to be a pleasant experience highlighted by excellent service, so I gladly climbed the  steps and encouraged the friend that was with me to do the same. My friend  happened to be in search of a clean, fresh fragrance and practically swooned when the sweet Edmonda suggested she try The Different Company Limon de Cordoza and Lostmarc’h L’Eau de L’Hermine.  We found the label of the latter, bearing the  illustration of an ermine, especially pretty.  In the end, my friend changed her mind and opted for something completely different: Vamp  a NY, a tropical, juicy tuberose from organic line Honoré des Prés.  Olfattorio also sells Les Parfums de Rosine, Coudray and L.T. Piver and has a few other salespoints in Milan.

After visiting the wonderful Pinacoteca di Brera, I made a stop at Profumo, on Via Brera where I managed to exchange a few words with Guido, its owner. Profumo was pioneer in the 1980s selling what we now call niche. Guido says  their job is to help the clients find the fragrance that satisfies their  necessities.  The boutique is intended to be a place dedicated to the culture of fragrance and not just for selling.  Profumo certainly has an inviting atmosphere:  in the store one can find two comfortable seats and a small bookcase with perfume-related books. These books are not on sale, but are meant for the customers to consult. The brand selection is impressive in number and quality: Maison Francis Kurkdjian,  Olivier Durbano, Montale, Cire Trudon, Tauer Perfumes, By Kilian, Mancera, Etat Libre d’Orange, Editions de Parfums, Keiko Mecheri, Parfumerie Generale, Pure Distance, Mona di Orio, Bruno Acampora. The place seems simply brilliant.

I later stopped at the traditional  profumeria Mazzolari as I was curious about their eponymous line of fragrances.  At the small shop on Corso Matteotti I met the cheerful and fun Luisa and Luigi. The latter is a makeup artist for Dior but was more than willing to help. After trying Mazzolari fragrances, I understood why Alessandro is the house’s best seller.  Almondy without marzipan clichés, it smells  warm and comforting yet it retains a certain driness and never becomes too sweet. Today, back home, I regret not having bought a bottle.  My second favorite was Musk and I also enjoyed their well rounded Patchouli.  Luigi apologized for not having Mazzolari fragrance samples, and gave me a few Diors, a gesture which was not necessary but I surely appreciated. They told me I should visit their other store, which is bigger and located on Corso Monforte.

I paid my visit the following day and found myself in beauty wonderland. The store has a vast selection of accesories, from Rubis tweezers to a myriad of fake eyelashes. I had to make a conscious effort not to look at  that area and focus on the fragrances instead.  As I visited the fragrance section I was assisted by a kind saleslady (whose name I unfortunately forgot to ask). She seemed very interested in helping out and in the fact that I was visiting from such a faraway place. Penhaligon’s, Crabtree & Evelyn, Clive Christian and Annick Goutal mingle with Thierry Mugler and other mainstream brands.

On my last day in Milan, I visited the carefully curated 10 Corso Como, owned by Carla Sozzani, Franca‘s sister.  Besides an incredible -no hyperbole here- selection of clothes and accesories, one can sniff Serge Lutens, By Kilian, Histoires de Parfums (if you haven’t yet tried Ambre 114, well, you must), Comme des Garcons, Les Parfums de Rosine, L’Artisan Parfumeur, Maison Francis Kurkdjian (the animalic Absolue pour le Soir stayed on my wrist for the rest of the day) and the boutique’s emblematic fragrance, 10 Corso Como,  which has dominant notes of sandalwood and frankincense. It wouldn’t hurt if the staff were friendlier, but I guess no one expects people to be friendly at fashionable places. The boutique is a Mecca for fashion lovers and I am sure receiving so many pilgrims must be exhausting.  10 Corso Como also houses an art gallery where I treated myself to a Peter Lindbergh photo exhibition.  I would have spent half a day  at the bookstore where, expectedly, fashion texts are the undisputed stars but -alas!- I had to rush in order not to miss my flight.
