¿Cómo podría eludir esta fragancia que lleva el nombre de una hierba tan enraizada en nuestra cultura? El Ilex Paraguariensis o yerba mate es una planta nativa de Paraguay, Uruguay, el noreste de Argentina y el sur de Brasil. Ya cultivada por los guaraníes con anterioridad al contacto con colonizadores europeos, luego fue comercializada por los jesuitas que estaban a cargo de las misiones y más tarde se convirtió en la bebida de rigor de los gauchos. El consumo de esta infusión estimulante se ha extendido ampliamente.
Las hojas de la yerba mate, secas y molidas, son colocadas en un recipiente (mate), rociadas con agua caliente y el líquido resultante, bebido a través de una bombilla. Los mates se elaboran en una variedad de materiales, desde simples calabazas secas a ornamentada platería, evocadora de los tiempos del virreinato. El sabor de la infusión es herbáceo, amargo y ligeramente ahumado, ya que para el secado de las hojas generalmente se emplea humo de leña. El aroma de la yerba mate verde es más fresco, (obviamente) verde y ligeramente floral.
El maestro florentino Lorenzo Villoresi creó su eau de toilette Yerbamate en el año 2001. Esta composición original parece ilustrar el pasaje de las hojas desde su cosecha hasta la etapa del secado o, quizás, la transición de la mañana al atardecer en las pampas.
La salida es cítrica, verde y vivificante, no muy distinta al olor de los pastos del campo en una mañana fresca, cuando las hojas aún están cubiertas de rocío. El limón y el gálbano dan su enfático presente. Luego de unos instantes, el verdor retrocede y Yerbamate se torna dorado, cálido, reminiscente de hierbas (estragón, lavanda, heno) y especias. Aún conserva un carácter rústico, pero cualquier posible aspereza ha desaparecido para este entonces. Ahora la fragancia se aventura en el más puro territorio Villoresi: el característico y tranquilizador toque amielado/atalcado de la casa no podía faltar. En este caso se ve enriquecido por maderas y esconde matices ligeramente ahumados.
Yerbamate es uno de mis preferidos dentro de esta noble y honesta línea italiana.

Lorenzo Villoresi Yerba Mate – A trip to the pampas
How could I bypass a fragrance named after an herb that is so deeply rooted in our culture? Ilex Paraguariensis or yerba mate is native to Paraguay, Uruguay, the North East of Argentina and the South of Brazil. Already cultivated by the Guaraní people prior to contact with European colonizers, it was later marketed by the jesuits in charge of the missions and afterwards became the de rigueur beverage of the gauchos. The consumption of this stimulating infusion has been extensively adopted.
The dried and ground yerba mate leaves are packed into a gourd (mate), steeped in hot water and the resulting liquid is drunk through a metal straw (bombilla). Mates are made in a variety of materials from the simplest dried gourd, to ornate silver beauties, evocative of viceroyal times. The infusion tastes bitter, grassy and slightly smoky as the leaves are generally dried using wood smoke. The smell of the unroasted yerba mate is fresher, green and slightly floral.
Florentine master Lorenzo Villoresi created his Yerbamate eau de toilette in 2001. This original composition seems to illustrate the passage of the leaves from the harvest to the drying stage or, perhaps, the transition from morning to dusk in the pampas.
The opening is citrusy, verdant and vivifying, not dissimilar to the smell of the countryside grasses on a crisp morning, when the leaves are still covered by dew. Lemon and galbanum are emphatically present. After a few instants, the greenness recedes and Yerbamate becomes golden, warm, redolent of herbs (tarragon, lavender, hay) and spices. There is still a rustic feel to it, but any possible sharpness is gone. The fragrance now heads into pure Villoresi territory: the house’s characteristic soothing honeyed powderiness couldn’t be left out from this creation. In this case, it is enriched by woods and hides subtle smoky hints.
Yerbamate is among my favorites from this honest and noble Italian line.
