The Vagabond Prince es una flamante casa de perfumes independiente, radicada en Estados Unidos, California y creada el año pasado por los fundadores de Fragrantica: Zoran Knezevic y Elena Knezhevich. Justamente fue Zoran quien me invitó a probar el primer lanzamiento de la marca, Enchanted Forest.

Este eau de parfum fue encomendado a Bertrand Duchaufour. Con Rusia como inspiración, sus vastos bosques, sus cuentos de hadas folklóricos y la fiesta de Ivan Kupala (fusión entre una celebración pre-cristiana del solsticio de verano y el Día de San Juan el Bautista) este perfumista encuentra los elementos que definen a la fragancia.

Duchaufour lo define como un solifloral de grosella negra (o cassis)  y celebra la oportunidad de haber podido construir una armonía olfativa exclusivamente en torno a ese fruto. Su labor fue el de esculpirlo y darle magnificencia, sin tener que recurrir a la tan trillada e indefinida mezcolanza de “frutos rojos”.

Pero “solifloral” no es sinónimo de lineal. En este caso, la creatividad del autor se luce en los juegos complejos que logra, exaltando diferentes aspectos del mismo objeto pero sin perder unicidad. En Enchanted Forest la unidad está dada por la oscuridad espesa y resinosa que la atraviesa. Y su complejidad reside en la paleta que hace a la estructura de la grosella negra, construida a partir de un extracto de brotes de grosellero, un absoluto y dos bases diferentes de grosella.

Es una fragancia enigmática y cautivante, por momentos embriaga (reminiscencias de ron y vino, pimienta rosa, aldehídos, madreselva, davana) y por otros llama al silencio introspectivo (romero, vetiver, semillas de coriandro ruso, espino blanco, musgo de roble, cedro, absoluto de bálsamo de abeto). Es, a la vez, el lado festivo de lo pagano y su contraparte solemne de los rituales cristianos tradicionales.

The Vagabond Prince Enchanted Forest – A dark and complex soliflore

The Vagabond Prince is a new independent perfume house based in California, U.S.A, which was created last year by the founders of Fragrantica: Zoran Knezevic and Elena Knezhevich. It was Zoran who invited me to test their first launch, Enchanted Forest.

This eau de parfum was entrusted to Bertrand Duchaufour. With Russia as inspiration, its vast forests and folk fairytales and the Ivan Kupala celebration (it’s a fusion between a pre-Christian summer solstice celebration and the Day of St. John the Baptist) the perfumer finds the nuances that delineate the fragrance.

Duchaufour defines it as a blackcurrant (or cassis) soliflore and he celebrates the opportunity of being able to build an olfactive harmony exclusively around that fruit. His task was to sculpt and give it splendor, without having to resort to the usually trite and vague mixture of “red fruits”.

But “soliflore” is not synonymous of linear. In this case, the author’s creativity shines in the complex games that he mastered, highlighting different aspects of the same object without losing uniqueness. In Enchanted Forest unity is given by the thick and resinous darkness that runs through it. And its complexity lies on the palette that makes the structure of blackcurrant note, built from an extract of blackcurrant buds, an absolute and two more different bases.

It is an enigmatic and captivating fragrance, intoxicating at times (by hints of rum and wine, pink pepper, aldehydes, honeysuckle, davana). Some other times it becomes a call for an introspective silence (thanks to rosemary, vetiver, Russian coriander seeds, hawthorn, oakmoss, cedar, fir balsam absolute). It is, at once, the festive side of a pagan celebration and its counterpart, solemn traditional Christian rituals.
